The Department of Communication Welcomes New Faculty

The Department of Communication is pleased to welcome Dr. Jiyeon Kang and Dr. Bree McEwan to our department. They joined the department in August 2009. Read more about our new faculty members…

Dr. Jiyeon Kang is an Assistant Professor at Western Illinois University. She received her B.A. and M.A. in Communication from Seoul National University, South Korea, and her Ph.D. in Speech Communication from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests focus on rhetoric and globalization, discursive practices of national identity, civic use of the Internet, and argumentation. She primarily teaches argumentation and rhetorical theory and criticism. Her work has appeared in the Quarterly Journal of Speech Communication and Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies.

Dr. Bree McEwan is a recent graduate of Arizona State University. Her undergraduate work was completed at Michigan State University. Dr. McEwan’s main research interests include aspects of communication within friend relationships. Dr. McEwan has presented research at regional and national communication conferences exploring secrets, gossip, friendship conflict and the communication of emotions in friendship. Her dissertation work focused on the communication processes utilized by university freshmen to create and maintain social networks and ultimately integrate into the institutional environment. While at ASU, Dr. McEwan participated on research projects that have recently been published in Western Journal of Communication (2009) and Communication Monographs (in press). Dr. McEwan‘s teaching interests include communication research methods, communication theory, interpersonal and relational communication.
