Student Employment
University Technology hires approximately 100 students to staff the computer labs and provide other types of support. Preference is given to qualified students who are willing to cover early morning, late night and weekend hours. To apply, first read the eligibility requirements and view the student worker job descriptions. If you feel qualified and prepared to seek employment with us, gather your class schedule, list of relevant courses taken, and three faculty/staff/previous employer contacts before filling out the online student application form. Once the application has been sent, you will be emailed confirmation it has been received. Please be patient while your application goes through a review process. If your qualifications and availability meet departmental needs, you may be contacted for an interview when positions become available.
Eligibility
All student workers are expected to work between 5 and 20 hours per week in the University Technology lab locations on campus. A neat appearance and good command of verbal and written English are required as well as the ability to learn computing applications independently. Student workers must have a strong desire to work with the public and be able to explain what they have learned to others.
Applicants must already be familiar with the Internet, E-mail utilities, industry standard Microsoft Office software, STARS and the campus LAN.
They must also have some knowledge of Windows, MAC or UNIX programs. Student workers will be expected to use entry-level Macintosh and Windows programs for word processing, spreadsheets, databases and electronic mail.
Some lab locations may require knowledge of programming languages and classroom-taught applications such as JAVA, Maple, Macromedia software and Microsoft Office.

University Technology Lab Positions
Lab Assistants
- These students are responsible for staffing campus computer labs and assisting students with various software and printing questions. They should know how to use the Internet as well as have extensive knowledge of PC and/or Macintosh software and hardware available in the WIU computer labs.
Lead Workers
- These students are responsible for managing computer labs and lab assistants. Duties include making sure the labs are staffed, training new staff, keeping supplies well-stocked, and making sure the labs are clean and tidy, as well as assisting students with various software and printing questions.
University Technology Office Positions
uTech Computer Store
- The Store offers Dell and Apple technology and is in the University Union. Students work between 9am and 5pm Monday through Friday providing front-line assistance to the public. These students must know how to use the Internet and various software programs. They greet walk-ins and answer telephones, relay computer hardware/software information and demonstrate new technologies.
Administrative Offices
- University Technology Administrative Offices are located in the University Library. Students here work with the public between 8am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Experience with personnel management, bookkeeping and databases is helpful. These students are responsible for the accounting related tasks of the department, for handling daily database and spreadsheet programs and general office duties.
University Technology Technical Support Positions
Support Center
- The Support Center provides phone-based technical support to faculty, staff and students with computing questions and hardware/software problems. Familiarity with the WIU computer labs is helpful.
Hardware Repair Center
- Students in the Hardware Repair Center, located in Stipes 126, work between 8am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday with computer hardware, printers and workstation setups.
Technical Assistants
- These students work directly with one of the Research and Instructional Consultant staff members. The R&I may be responsible for a variety of areas in addition to performing service ticket assignments (i.e. installation of software or hardware for faculty and staff, etc.)
University Technology ResNet Positions
ResNet Technicians
- ResNet Technicians provide technical support for the residence hall network and residents.
