CBT presents "Industry
on Campus: A Western Illinois-Monsanto Company Partnership"
The College of Business and Technology will
present "Industry on Campus: A Western Illinois-Monsanto
Company Partnership" as part of the CBT Research Series from
12:45-2 p.m., Friday Feb. 2 in Stipes Hall 206. Pizza and
soda will be provided and grad students are encouraged to attend.
During the Fall 1999 semester, eight Monsanto scientists traveled
to Macomb to teach Agronomy 275 - "Biotechnology in Agriculture"
at WIU. This presentation will address issues such as: what did
the agriculture department do to attract Monsanto to teach such
a course; what did it cost the CBT to offer such a course; what
did Monsanto gain from its participation; how do competitors of
Monsanto view this project and much more.
Faculty Development to
present -- Special Admit Student -- One of Our Best-Kept Secrets
Faculty Development will present "Special
Admit Students--One of Our Best-Kept Secrets" from 2-3
p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7 in the Union Cardinal-Oak Room. The
presentation will cover the selection process used when working
with perspective students and their families, the participation
contract that selected participants sign, the nature of the tools
and resources Academic Services advisers utilize in their work
with program participants, and statistical comparisons as they
relate to program participants and non-program participants.Register

Brown-Bag Teaching Discussions
Faculty Development will sponsor three brown-bag
teaching discussions during spring semester. The first discussion,
titled "Teaching as a Scholarly Activity," will be led
by Jean Maakestad Wolf, curriculum and instruction, from
12-1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14 in the Union Fox Room. Topics
for Wednesday, March 14 and Wednesday, April 11 will
be announced at a later date. Registration is not required.
Introduction to PowerPoint
Learn to create effective overheads, transparencies,
or computer generated slide shows when Kevin Hall, engineering
technology, presents workshops on Introduction to PowerPoint from
1-2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 and Friday, April 6 in
Knoblauch Hall 106. The sessions are open to both Mac and Windows
users. Participants should bring a copy of their syllabus or other
document to work from. Sign up for only one session; register

OPS Enforces Speed Limit
While the weather this time of year continues
to change, the speed limit does not. The Office of Public Safety
would like to remind drivers that the speed limit on Western Avenue
from Adams Street to University Drive is 20 mph between 7 a.m.
and 7 p.m. The speed limit in parking lots is 10 mph. All
other streets are 30 mph unless otherwise posted. For more information,

Faculty Chamber Series
III Recital
The music faculty will present the third
recital in its Faculty Chamber Music Series at 8 p.m. Friday,
Feb. 9 in Hainline Theatre.
The Camerata Woodwind Quintet will perform
the "Quintet, Opus 43" by Carl Nielsen--the major work
for the quintet medium by a major symphonic composer. The second
half of the concert will include "Ritual" for clarinet,
trumpet and percussion by David Heinick, and "Voice of the
Whale" for flute, cello and piano by George Crumb.
The members of the Camerata Woodwind Quintet
are Andrea Redcay, Michael Ericson, Eric Ginsberg, Douglas
Huff and Randall Faust. Performing the "Ritual"
by David Heinick will be Ginsberg, Bruce Briney and Kevin
Nichols. Crumb's "Voice of the Whale" will feature
Redcay, Moises Molina and Tammie Walker.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Regional Touring Theatre
To Present Free Preview of "Rosie and the Rosettes"
The WIU Regional Touring Theatre will present
a free preview of the musical "Rosie and the Rosettes"
based on the songs by singer/songwriter Carole King at 2 p.m.
Sunday, Feb. 4 in the Simpkins Theatre.
This play will be performed at nearly 90
elementary schools and community sites in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri
during the spring semester. It runs about 45 minutes. All members
of the campus community are invited to this free preview. For

Faculty Recital Cancelled
The faculty voice recital of Marietta Dean
scheduled for 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5 has been cancelled.
Social Activist To Speak
At Conference
Social justice activist Tim Wise will be
the keynote speaker at WIU's WISDOM conference, an annual cultural
issues conference open to all students Saturday, Feb. 3.
Wise, a popular political speaker at college
campuses nationwide, is scheduled to speak at 9 a.m. Feb. 3
in the Union Grand Ballroom. The founder of the Association for
White Anti-Racism Education (AWARE), Wise is committed to fighting
racism; challenging institutional racism in education, employment
and the criminal justice system; and defending affirmative action.
The WISDOM conference will run from 9 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. in the Union. For more information or to register,

Monday, Feb. 5 - Wednesday, Feb. 7,
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools team to visit
campus for site evaluation.
Steam Shutdown For North Campus
The Physical Plant will shut the steam off
to the north campus from 8 a.m. Sunday, May 6 until
5 p.m. Tuesday, May 29. A second steam outage to
north campus is tentatively scheduled from 8 a.m. Sunday, July
29 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10.
Buildings affected by these steam lines
are: Bayliss/Henninger Halls, Brophy Hall, Commissary, Currens
Hall, Greenhouse, Higgins Hall, Horrabin Hall, Knoblauch Hall,
Morgan Hall, Physical Plant, Stipes Hall, Student Recreation Center,
Tanner Hall, Thompson Hall, Library, Union, Waggoner Hall, Western
Hall and Wetzel Hall.
The shutdown is necessary to inspect and
repair the large steamlines that serve the buildings on north
campus and to insure a minimum amount of problems during extreme
weather.

The initial steam tunnel shutdown for south
campus is scheduled for the two weeks after spring semester 2002.
The second steam shutdown is tentatively scheduled for the two
weeks after the school of the summer of 2002..
Phi Kappa Phi Faculty Initiates
Phi Kappa Phi is seeking nominations from
faculty for 2001 faculty initiates. Nominations must be accompanied
by a letter of nomination and a copy of the nominee's current
detailed resume containing a list of scholarly achievements and
other activities indicating high-quality academic work.
Phi Kappa Phi members are encouraged to
nominate faculty who they believe are deserving of the honor.
