Barnett Accepts Position in Florida

Jim Barnett, director of the Physical Plant, has accepted an associate vice president for facilities position at the University of West Florida, Pensacola. Barnett has served as WIU's physical plant director since January 1994.

Barnett will begin his duties in Florida full-time starting Aug. 13. He will be responsible for the departments of environmental health and safety, architectural and engineering services and facilities management. According to Vice President for Administrative Services Jackie Thompson, Ed Crahan, physical plant assistant director, will serve as interim director. A national search will be conducted.

During Barnett's tenure at Western, significant capital renewal and major construction projects have taken place including the renovation of Knoblauch Hall, the new Student Recreation Center, the Beu Health Center renovation, the Simpkins Recital Hall, the Thompson-Higgins dining hall and the Utility Tunnel project. Barnett also initiated several campus beautification programs, including the Lake Ruth restoration and the annual We Care program.

A native of north central Missouri, Barnett earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial education at Truman State University, Kirksville, MO, and his doctorate in industrial and technical education at Texas A & M - Commerce.

Crahan has been the assistant director of the physical plant since December 1990. He previously was a mechanical engineer III. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Rolla, he came to WIU in April 1986.
