USGA Awards $72,500 to WIU

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has awarded a $72,500 grant to Western to support the recent construction of forward tees and continued programming at Western's Harry Mussatto Golf Course.

On Friday, July 6 a formal grant check presentation was made by USGA Executive Committee member Eric Gleacher at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course, located north of the WIU campus. The presentation was part of the golf course's grand opening and golf outing. During the program, the back nine holes of the course were dedicated to Gleacher for his generous financial support of golf at Western. The grand opening marks the completion of renovations on the original course (O.L. Champion Nine) and the construction of nine additional holes (Gleacher Nine).

Through the USGA grant, the University built 15 forward tees as part of the renovation to help junior and senior golfers enjoy the course even more, according to WIU Director of Golf Mel Blasi. In addition, the University runs a variety of programming for area youth at the course, including the Macomb Area Junior Golf Camp, which serves 130 youths each year, and a junior golf league. Some participants in these programs receive free access and instruction at the course.
