Professional Accomplishments
- Andrew Baker, agriculture, attended
the Illinois FFA Association Convention in Springfield. He helped
judge Agriscience Fair Projects, coordinated the District Agriculture
Issues Contest, and was recognized for his year-long service
on the Illinois FFA Association Board of Directors. Baker also
attended the Illinois Association of Vocational Agriculture
Teachers Convention held in Decatur where he was responsible
for recognizing the past year's student teachers as well as
presenting a program report. He also hosted one of the six business
sessions held during the convention. Baker also presented an
educational workshop at the National Ag-in-the-Classroom Convention
in Chicago. He presented two concurrent workshops "Using
Students to Teach Students."
- Kathy Barclay, curriculum and
instruction, presented "Connecting Families, Schools and
Communities: How to Help Parents and Teachers" at the co-sponsored
meeting of the National Association of Black School Executives
held at the International Reading Association Annual Conference
in New Orleans. Barclay has also been invited by Lura Lynn Ryan,
Illinois' first lady, to serve on the implementation team for
the state's Heads Up! Reading Initiative.
- F. Gene Miller, Curriculum Publications
Clearinghouse, displayed materials at the Family Literacy Conference
in Springfield. Miller also displayed materials at the Connections
Conference in Springfield.
- Russell Morgan, psychology, and
graduate students M. L. Thomas and D. J. Morrell presented
"Exposure to Oxybutynin, but not Tolteradine, Produces
Cognitive Impairments in Rats Tested in the Radial-Arm Maze"
at the International Behavioral Neuroscience Society conference
in Cancun.
- Jim Patterson, management, was
recently elected 2001-2002 president of NAPM-Quad Cities, an
affiliate of the Institute for Supply Management, formerly the
National Association of Purchasing Management. He also received
NAPM-QC's "Ed Roush Award for Outstanding Service"
for hosting the NAPM Satellite Seminar Series since 1997.
- Danny Terry, agriculture, has
been named president of the National Association of Colleges
and Teachers of Agriculture.
- At a recent Midwest Association for Education
of Young Children (AEYC) Conference in Des Moines, Center for
Best Practices in Early Childhood staff made the following presentations:
Linda Robinson presented "Putting the Pieces Together:
Making Technology Work in the Early Childhood Classroom;"
Amy Betz presented "Exploring Early Math and Science
Concepts" and Carol Schneider presented "I
Can Do It-You Can Too! Make the Arts Accessible for all Children."
The following staff members made these presentations at the
the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Conference in Kansas
City, Missouri: Letha Clark presented "Exploring
Early Math and Science Concepts;" Clark and Janet
Bond presented "Putting the Pieces Together: Making
Technology Work in the Early Childhood Classroom" and Judy
Potter and Terry Carley presented "Expressive
Arts Foster Emergent Literacy."
- The following faculty and students from
the department of psychology were presenters at the 73rd Annual
Meeting of the Midwestern Psychological Association in Chicago.
Kelly Plummer, Jeremy Watkins and Kristine Kelly
presented "Will You Sleep with Me?: An Evolutionary Perspective
on Attractiveness, Gender, & Sexual Receptivity."
Jennifer Nelson and Karen Harris presented "Constructive
Conflict: Negotiation Outcome as a Function of Party Composition
and Task Conflict." Twelve students, sponsored by psychology
faculty Kristine Kelly and J.P. James, made presentations.
- The following faculty and students from
the psychology department were presenters at 13th annual convention
of the American Psychological Society held in Toronto: Virginia
Diehl presented "Revising Instructions After Task Performance;"
Valerie Smead presented "Food Preoccupation, Craving,
and Binge Eating: A Replication and Extension;" Kimberley
McClure, Natasha Rainbolt, and Brandon Dowacter and
Kristine Kelly presented "Social Punishment, Embarrassment,
and Experience with Law Enforcement."
Grants
- Patricia Hutinger and Joyce
Johanson, Center for Best Practices in Early Childhood Education,
received $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Education for
the project "ECCTS III (Early Childhood Comprehensive Technology
System III) – Year 3."
- Norm Walzer, Illinois Institute
for Rural Affairs, received $2,185 from the Western Illinois
Regional Council for the project "Brownsfield Project 2."
Publication
- Publication Vin Auger, political
science, had a letter to the editor published in the July/August
2001 edition of Foreign Affairs. AugerÕs letter was in response
to C. Fred BergstenÕs article entitled ÒAmericaÕs Two-Front
Economic ConflictÓ (March/April 2001).
