Campus Connection to Reduce Schedule

Due to the recent Illinois budget shortfall and WIU's subsequent budget cut-backs, Campus Connection will be printed every other week, beginning Jan. 25. The schedule for Spring 2002 is as follows: issues will be printed Jan. 18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22, March 8, March 22, April 5, April 19 and May 3. The tentative summer production schedule is as follows: June 7 and July 12.

 

Werling, Andrews Organ Recital April 19

Anita Werling, music, and alumna Linda Bliven Andrews will perform the major organ works by French composer Maurice Duruflé at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 19 at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Carroll St., Macomb. The recital is open free to the public.

 

Retirement Reception For Conger

A retirement reception will be held for James Conger, study abroad and WESL, from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 in Horrabin Hall 01. Remarks will begin at 4:30 p.m. Conger's last day will be June 30.

 

Vote To Name New E-mail System

The campus community can now vote to name the new campus e-mail system. Go to www.wiu.edu/RockyMail to vote.

 

SAC To Hold Carwash

The Alumni Council (SAC) will hold a carwash from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20 in the Ponderosa parking lot (near Wal-Mart) in Macomb. The carwash is a fundraiser to support SAC programs, such as student leadership scholarships, the high school leadership banquet, Homecoming and Golden Apple Awards. Retirement Celebration Planned For Taylor

Western's current president and former dean of the College of Education and Human Services, David Taylor, will be honored at a retirement celebration from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 3 in the Union Grand Ballroom. Taylor will speak briefly at 5 p.m.

 

Take Our Daughters to Work Day April 25

Parents, guardians, grandparents or friends of girls ages nine to 15 are invited to bring the girls to work during WIU's "Take Our Daughters to Work Day" (TODTWD) celebration Thursday, April 25. From 8:30 a.m. to noon, participants can enjoy breakfast, interactive projects and a campus tour. The rest of the day is reserved for time spent at work with parents and other sponsors. Cost for the breakfast and activities is $5 for adults; $3 for girls. Hattwick Retirement Reception

After 33 years, Richard Hattwick is retiring from the department of economics. A reception will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 in Stipes 501. Send thoughts and comments to be included in a memory book to the economics department, 442 Stipes Hall.

 

Retirement Reception To Honor Parker

The department of communication will hold a retirement reception in honor of Rebecca Parker from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 3 in the Union Lamoine Room. A program will begin at 4:30 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and a cash bar will be available.

 

Camerata Woodwin Quintet To Perform

The Camerata Woodwind Quintet will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21 in the College of Fine Arts and Communication Recital Hall on the north side of Simpkins Hall. The performance is open free to the public.

 

Clothesline Project Display April 23-24

To raise awareness of violence targeted at women and children, the annual Clothesline Project T-shirt Display will be Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24. The display, which will feature more than 125 T-shirts, can be viewed in the Free Speech Area north of the University Union, weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, the display will be held in the Union Heritage Room. Call 298-2242 or 836-2148 for more information.

 

Technology Education Exhibit April 25-26

The 45th annual Technology Education Exhibit will be held Thursday and Friday, April 25-26 in Western Hall. The exhibit will feature more than 1,000 projects constructed by junior high and senior high students in vocational-technical education classes from throughout Illinois and southeastern Iowa. The public is invited to walk through a free showing from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, April 26 in Western Hall. Call 298-2388 or 298-1091 for information.

 

Blood Drive

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the Union Heritage Room. Appointments can be made by calling 837-1594 during business hours or 298-1950 during the hours of the drive.

 

Five Faculty Inducted into Phi Kappa Phi

Five WIU faculty members were recently initiated into Western's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) honor society.

Faculty inducted into PKP include K. Dale Adkins, recreation, park and tourism administration; Shawn Meagher, biology; Stephany Joy-Newman, University Counseling Center and counselor education and college student personnel; Hugh Shane, management; and S'thembile West, assistant professor, African American studies.

 

Laser Physics Topic of April 25 Lecture

Research physicist Christopher Monroe will be at Western Thursday and Friday, April 25-26 as part of the American Physical Society Division of Laser Science Distinguished Traveling Lectures program. Monroe will present "Building a Quantum Computer Atom by Atom" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 25 in Currens Hall 203, open free to the public. Summer Grant Proposal Writing Program

Faculty are invited to participate in WIU's Summer Grant Proposal Writing Program offered by the Office of Sponsored Projects. The program helps faculty pursue external funds in the form of research, public service or instructional grants. Participants receive a $1,000 stipend on July 1, 2002 and an additional $1,000 upon submission of a grant proposal to an external agency by August 31, 2003. Topics of the program include application submission to the Office of Sponsored Projects by April 30, 2002; attendance at summer sessions scheduled for Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in June and July (ending July 24); and submission of a grant proposal to an external agency by August 31, 2003. To apply, submit a one-page (or less) description of an idea for an externally-supported grant along with names of possible funding agencies (if known), a letter from the department chairperson recommending the applicant's participation and a copy of your curriculum vitae to the Office of Sponsored Projects by April 30. Holiday Open House

In keeping with the tradition of President Don and Dr. Sue Spencer, President David R. Taylor and Dr. Linda Stickney-Taylor will hold a holiday open house Sunday, Dec. 16 from 1-5 p.m. at 2001 N. Wigwam Hollow Road.

All members of the Western Illinois University and Macomb communities are invited to attend.
