Connection to Reduce Schedule
Due to the recent Illinois budget shortfall
and WIU's subsequent budget cut-backs, Campus Connection will
be printed every other week, beginning Jan. 25. The schedule
for Spring 2002 is as follows: issues will be printed Jan.
18, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22, March 8, March 22, April 5, April
19 and May 3. The tentative summer production schedule
is as follows: June 7 and July 12.
UIMS To Drop Hummingbird
As of June 30, University Information
Management Systems will no longer support Hummingbird HostExplorer.
Due to the need to secure the transfer of sensitive data a new
3270-emulator application called QWS3270 will be used to access
the WIU MVS system. QWS3270 Secure allows PCs running Microsoft
Windows to connect to IBM mainframes over a secure TCP/IP connection.
Those currently using HostExplorer must
change to QWS3270 Secure by June 30, 2002. If you are still
using Hummingbird HostExplorer, visit our website at http://mvs.wiu.edu/3270emulation.html
for instructions on how to uninstall and convert to QWS3270
Secure or contact the Help Desk at 298-2104.
International Potluck
A potluck dinner will be held at 5:30
p.m. Thursday, May 30 in Everly Park to welcome new international
students. Table service and beverages will be provided. Participants
are asked to bring a dish to share. In the event of rain, the
event will be held at the Lutheran Student Center, 303 N. Clay

Taylor Retirement Reception
Friday
David R. Taylor will be honored at
a retirement celebration from 4-6 p.m. Friday, May 3 in
the Union Grand Ballroom. Taylor will speak briefly at 5 p.m.
Graduate Commencement
Notice
Faculty who would like to march in the graduate
commencement at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 10 in Western Hall

Affirmative Action Reception
May 9
Several individuals will be honored at the
annual WIU Affirmative Action Awards for Excellence in Multicultural
Programming Thursday, May 9 on the WIU campus.
The reception will be held from 4-6 p.m.
in the University Union Capitol Rooms. Western alumnus and
Board of Trustees member Dace Richardson will be the featured
speaker. Richardson has received many awards throughout his career
for excellence in developing team leadership approaches and for
promoting workforce diversity/equal opportunity. The public is
invited to attend. For more information or to confirm attendance,

Civil Service Council
Election Results
The following individuals have been elected
to the Civil Service Employees Council: Group I -Sherry Lavingon,
admissions; Group II-Lin Waller, financial aid; Group III-Amy
Nelson, University Information Management Systems; Group IV-Loretta
Baucom, building services; Group V-Bonnie Riggens,
athletics; and Group VI-Steve Whan, WIU-Quad Cities.
Benefit Choice Changes
Benefit Choice changes must be received
in Human Resources by May 31. Telephone changes may be
made until midnight on May 31. Changes will be effective
July 1, 2002 through June 30, 2003. Employees must re-enroll
in the Medical Care Assistance Plan and/or the Dependent Care
Assistance Plan to continue participation for the next plan year.Call
298-1853 with any questions.
Math TEAM Event A Success
More than 180 students in grades two through
six participated in the Mathematical Power Equals Problem Solving
Event at WIU. The event is part of the National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics' World's Largest Math Event - VIII. The WIU Math
TEAM, a student group of future teachers, organized the event,
under the direction of Jim Olsen, mathematics.
