Commencement Weekend May 10-11
Ceremonies recognizing the academic and personal
accomplishments of Western students and alumni will be held Friday
and Saturday, May 10-11 during WIU's Spring 2002 Commencement
weekend.
Robert Nardelli, president and CEO
of The Home Depot, and Eric Gleacher, president and CEO
of Gleacher & Co. will be presented with Honorary Doctorates
of Humane Letters and will speak at Commencement Ceremonies. Nardelli
and William Epperly, WIU's Distinguished Alumni Award recipient,
will address the 9:30 a.m. graduation ceremony; Gleacher
will speak to the 1:30 p.m. ceremony.
Friday, May 10 activities will begin
at 4 p.m. with the Academic Honors Convocation in Western
Hall for undergraduate students achieving academic distinction
during the completion of their degrees. Medallions will be awarded
to honors scholars, departmental and college scholars, and to
scholars achieving cum laude, magna cum laude and summa cum laude
status. WIU's military science department
will conduct Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Commissioning
at 6 p.m. Friday in the Union Heritage Rooms. At 7:30
p.m. Western Hall will be the site of Graduate Commencement
Exercises, recognizing students completing graduate and education
specialist degrees.
Commencement ceremonies for undergraduate
students will be held at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday,
May 11 in Western Hall. The morning ceremony will include
students in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business
and Technology and the Board of Trustees Bachelor of Arts degree
program. The afternoon ceremony will include students in the College
of Education and Human Services, the College of Fine Arts and
Communication and individual studies students.
The 9:30 a.m. ceremony will include
the presentation of WIU's Distinguished Alumni Award to Epperly
and the Honorary Doctorate to Nardelli. The 1:30 p.m. ceremony
will include the presentation of an Honorary Doctorate to Gleacher.
Board of Trustees Chair Carolyn Ehlert will give remarks
on behalf of Western's Board, and President David Taylor will
confer degrees at each Commencement ceremony.
