  • Robert Mann, Mathematics, published “Thinking Beyond the Box: Responses to the Building a Box Problem” in the journal Teaching Children Mathematics volume 11, number 3, 171-176, October 2004.
  • Richard Ness, broadcasting and communication, published “Film and the Fourth Estate: The Journalism Film as a Genre” in the anthology Print the Legend:  Cinema and Journalism published by Cahiers du Cinema.
  • John Simmons, philosophy and religious studies, published “Neurotheology and Spiritual Transformation: Clues in the Work of Joel Goldsmith” in the Journal of the Society for the Study of Metaphysical Religion, Fall 2004 (vol.10, no. 2).
  • David Voss, mathematics, co-authored “Using Meshfree Approximation for Multi-Asset American Options,” which was published in the Journal of the Chinese Institute of Engineers  special issue on methods, volume 27, number 4, 563-571, 2004.
Grants
  • Rodney Greer, educational and interdisciplinary studies, received $40,000 from the Illinois Board of Higher Education/Higher Education Cooperation Act for the project “Project RSP: Recruiting, Supporting and Preparing Minority Teachers.”
  • Patricia Hutinger and Carol Bell, Center for Best Practices in Early Childhood Education, received $399,997 from the U.S. Department of Education for the project “Birth to Three TechTools.”
  • Lori Sutton, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, received $8,500 from various local sources for the project “Continuum of Care Support.”
  • Norman Walzer, Illinois Institute for Rural Affiars, received $125,000 from the U.S. Department of Commerce/Economic Development Administration for the project “WCI Revitalization Planning Project.”

Professional Activities
  • Hunt Dunlap, libraries, presented “Creating Dynamic Database Driven Websites” at the Illinois Library Association’s Annual Conference in Chicago.
  • Rodney J. Greer, College of Education and Human Services, served as program chair for the 2004 Annual Meeting of the Mid-Western Educational Research Association in Columbus, OH. Greer is also MWERA vice president.
  • James Huesmann, dean of University Libraries and assistant provost for Computing and Information Technology, presented “The USA Patriot Act and Libraries—Intended and Unintended Effects,” at the Oxford (England) Round Table.
  • Richard Ness, broadcasting and communication, was invited to participate as a member of the “Newfront:  Cinema et Media” panel of international scholars and filmmakers at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland. Ness also presented “Silent Sobs: The Female Reporter in Films of the Pre-Sound Era” at the annual Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication Conference in Toronto.
