Organizations

ASSOCIATION OF BILINGUAL/BICULTURAL EDUCATION STUDENTS (ABBES) provides opportunities to participate in service activities, field trips, and career-related outings. Professional development activities and language fluency geared toward working in the bilingual/bicultural field are fostered by this service/social organization. Newly enrolled students are paired with junior/senior mentors. Mentors provide experience-based advice and language assistance in English or Spanish. They also address the concerns of the association's newest members.

EARLY CHILDHOOD ORGANIZATION FOR STUDENTS (ECHOS) fosters professional growth and development of students in their work with and on behalf of young children and families. The group meets monthly to gain information about teaching practices, plan volunteer activities, and develop relationships with other students. Contact Jean Wolf for additional information.

ILLINOIS COLLEGIATE MUSIC EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION (ICMEA) develops and enriches collegiate students who desire to be music educators. Chapter meets bi-weekly and holds presentations, discussions and features guest educators from the community, university, and the state of Illinois to assist in developing awareness of real-world issues and solutions in music education in the 21st century. KAPPA DELTA PI Is an International Honor Society in Education. Members must have a 3.60 GPA or higher.
Topics of interest to students in the teacher education field are planned to enhance students' understanding of the roles, expectations, and requirements of the instructional classroom and the educational job market.

STUDENT COUNCIL FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN (SCEC) offers special education majors the opportunity to develop leadership skills and to participate in professional development activities. SCEC is affiliated with the Council for Exceptional Children, the premier international professional organization in the field. Contact the Special Education Department for additional information.

STUDENT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (SEA) is a pre-professional organization for students who are preparing for careers in education. SEA members are part of the 110,000 Illinois Education Association (IEA), the largest professional organization for teachers in the state.

WESTERN ILLINOIS READING COUNCIL Promotes reading through special programs and projects in the western section of the state. Children's authors, reading techniques and independent reading sources are the focus of the programs.
Student membership is $15. Fee provides the issues of the IL State Reading Council Reading Journal and the IL State Reading Council Communicator.
