APT EXAM NOW REQUIRED TO PASS STUDENT TEACHING
Effective Spring 2008, all student teaching candidates must pass the APT exam in order to pass student teaching. This policy was approved by the University Teacher Education Committee (UTEC) at its April 17, 2007, meeting.
For those candidates who experience difficulties in passing this exam, a remediation procedure is available. Details about remediation are available in the Center for the Preparation of Education Professionals, Horrabin Hall 91.
This checklist serves as a reminder that all student teaching clearance requirements must be satisfied by the dates indicated in order to student teach spring semester 2008. Be reminded that:
- Any course work to be transferred to WIU to satisfy graduation requirements must be recorded on the WIU transcript by December 17, 2007.
- Any fall 2006 course work required to satisfy program/degree requirements must be completed at WIU, Macomb or QC campus.
- All WIU course work (including independent study) must be completed and a final grade recorded on your WIU transcript by December 17, 2007.
- An "Incomplete" in any course work (including independent study) is a deficiency. Any grade changes must be recorded on the WIU transcript by December 17, 2007.
- You must verify passing results of the applicable content-area test(s) [and language proficiency tests where applicable] in the Center for the Preparation of Education Professionals (Horrabin Hall 91, WIU, Macomb, IL 61455) by December 1, 2007. The latest possible date for taking the required test(s) will be November3, 2007. It is recommended you not wait this late!
- You must maintain the required cumulative and major GPAs for your major. If student teaching in the minor area, you must maintain the minimum GPA required for the minor. Student teaching at the middle level requires satisfactory completion of C & I 403 with a minimum grade of “C” prior to the student teaching term.
- You must provide official verification of a TB skin test taken the semester prior to student teaching. We request that you wait until mid October to have this test as some school districts may require verification that this test was completed within 90 days of your start date. This test may be done through Beu Health Center, a private physician, or county health department. Official results must be submitted to the Center for the Preparation of Education Professionals by December 1, 2007.
- You must provide official verification of an Illinois State Police background investigation completed the semester prior to student teaching (to be completed after September 1). Results must be approved and on file in the Center for the Preparation of Education Professionals by December 1, 2007.
- You must satisfy the portfolio requirements established by the University Teacher Education Committee. Portfolio clearance must be recorded in the Center for the Preparation of Education Professionals by December 1, 2007. Note that your major department will have an earlier clearance deadline; check with your department.
- You must be registered for STCH coursework by December 17, 2007. You may not begin your student teaching assignment unless you are officially registered with the University.
Remember: You must successfully pass the applicable APT test prior to graduation. Plan to take this exam during your student teaching semester or earlier.
Students who do not satisfy all clearance requirements as noted herein will be canceled from student teaching.
