GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CURRENT WIU STUDENTS
BE WISE! BE ADVISED! SEE YOUR ADVISOR!
You must plan your schedule for the pre registration period with your Academic Advisor prior to registering on the STARS system. Do not wait until the last minute to make your advising appointment, or you may miss your STARS pre registration date. Delaying the
scheduling of your appointment may find you unable to meet with him/her until after your assigned pre registration time. Your lack of planning will not be their emergency.
The registration day and time may be found by logging on to STARS. All encumbrances must be cleared before you will be allowed to register. Don't wait until all of your encumbrances are cleared to meet with your advisor.
Reasons to see your advisor:
-
To plan your classes for next semester
-
To drop or add a class after registering
-
For program and career planning
-
For clarification of University policies and procedures
-
When filing your graduation application
-
Finding a resource to help you solve a problem.
REGISTRATION
-
You are responsible for making an early appointment to get your encumbrances lifted. If you wait until registration starts, you will not be able to register on time. You should be in to make an appointment prior to October 15th in the Fall and March 15th in the Spring!
-
You can find your registration date on STARS registration screen (REGN) after the tenth day of classes.
-
You will be able to tell on STARS the status of courses by using the Open Class Section Screen (OPSC).
-
You are responsible for knowing whether or not you need to turn in permission forms. Check STARS course search detail.
-
If you have questions, contact your academic advisor in HH91.
-
Be sure to refer to the University' s Academic Calendar for information on deadlines; class registration drop/add dates, dates for first and second eight week classes; etc.
All requests for special permission for teacher education courses from the COEHS Advising Center MUST be submitted before the end of the semester.
Encumbrances do not have to be cleared to receive permission.
Receiving permission for a class guarantees you a seat in that class.
Unused permissions will be removed May 1st or December 1st (depending on semester), unless the student has a financial encumbrance. This includes permission for EIS 401, all ITT courses, all SPED and all C &I (ELED/ECH) courses. Check STARS course search detail to see what courses require special permission.
E-MAIL ACCOUNTS - IMPORTANT!
All students must make sure they activate and use their WIU e-mail. Early warning grade notices, financial aid information and other pertinent information for students will be sent via e-mail beginning Spring semester. The COEHS Advising Center plans on utilizing this new service to communicate important advising information and issues to students.
To activate your WIU e-mail account, go to http://www.wiu.edu/guava/servlets/main. Follow instructions and use your ECOM username (lowercase) Check your e-mail at www.wiu.edu/WebMail
Call the University Computer Support Services (UCSS) Help Desk at 309 298-2704 or visit the UCSS office (Stipes Hall 126), if you have questions or need assistance. Students at the Quad Cities may visit the computer lab in room 142.
Note about Security of e-mail:
The university does not recommend the forwarding of WIU e-mail. Forwarding your mail removes the security protocols that are in place with the WIU accounts. Much of the information sent to you by the various offices on campus may contain personal and confidential materials. Without the security protocols, hackers may be able to get this information. It will not be secure.
SCHOOL ADDRESS
If you do not live in the residence halls, it is very important that you file your local address with the Registrar's Office, Sherman Hall 110 or on STARS Comment screen. We have no way to contact you, when only your home address is listed. Also, please make sure you list your local telephone number and e-mail address.
