Requirements for Iowa Reading Endorsement
Iowa requirements can be accessed at http://www.boee.iowa.gov/addition.html
Reading K-8. Iowa requires the completion of 24 semester hours of coursework that addresses specific comptencies. This required content is included in the ten courses listed below. Thus, teachers will need to complete 30 semester hours of coursework to be recommended for the endorsement through Western Illinois University. If you have already completed a children's literature course, you will not need to complete LLA 513. Twenty-seven hours of coursework are required for those students who have taken this course.
* RDG 570 - Teaching Reading in the Elementary School
* RDG 571 - Assessment of Reading Abilities and Disabilities
* RDG 573 - Correction and Remediation of Reading Difficulties
* RDG 576 - Psychology of Reading
* RDG 580 - Reading in the Content Areas
* RDG 586 - Language Development and Reading
* RDG 587 - Practicum in Reading K-6
* LA 567 - Teaching Language Arts in the Elementary School
* LA 578 - Language Arts for Diverse Learners
* LLA 513 - Advanced Children's Literature

Thus, teachers will need to complete 30 semester hours of coursework to be recommended for the endorsement through Western Illinois University. If you have already completed an adolescent or young adult literature course, you will not need to complete LLA 523. Twenty-seven hours of coursework are required for those teachers who have taken this course.
