Sarah Miner Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality Scholarship

Ms. Sarah Miner joined the faculty of Western Illinois University in 1936 to teach Foods and Nutrition courses. She also served as a dietitian for the campus food service. In 1945 she became Department Chairperson, a position she was to hold until her retirement in 1965. Under her leadership, the Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality Department grew to its present stature. Although a Department Chairperson, Ms. Miner continued to remain an active and respected member of the teaching faculty where she inspired students to reach their full potential. Along with her teaching, Ms. Miner served as President of the Illinois Family and Consumer Sciences Association, Illinois Vocational Teachers Association and Illinois Nutrition Committee. After retiring, Ms. Miner moved to Nigeria to assume the position of Head of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Nigeria at Nsukha.

The Sarah Miner Dietetics, Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality Scholarship was established by department alumni contributions in recognition of an individual who continuously gave to her students, the Department, faculty, community and Western Illinois University her inspiration, leadership and contributions.
