Degrees at a Distance Program for Firefighters National Fire Academy Certificates

WIU offers firefighters enrolled in the Degrees at a Distance Program (DDP) three options for National Fire Academy certificates.

Certificate of Completion

Available to any student who successfully completes any DDP course at Western Illinois University. These certificates are the same as those awarded for resident courses at the NFA in Emmitsburg, Maryland. An application form (pdf) for the certificate is included in the DDP course materials and must be submitted to the course instructor or the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies (BGS) Degree Program office.

Certificate of Accomplishment

Available to any student who successfully completes the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) six course core curriculum. The six courses are listed below:

LEJA 482 Analytical Approaches to Public Fire Administration
LEJA 483 Personnel Management for the Fire and Emergency Services
SOC 488 Community and the Fire Threat
SOC 487 Applications of Fire Research
LEJA 484 Fire Prevention Organization & Management

Certificate of Achievement

Available to any student who earns the WIU Bachelor of Arts in General Studies Degree and completes the seven core DDP courses and three additional courses in one of two areas of concentration for a total of 30 semester hours of credit.

Requirements

The specific DDP course requirements to earn the Certificate of Achievement include a total of 10 courses; the seven core courses, plus three courses from one of the two concentrations listed below:
