Western Illinois University is pleased to offer “New Directions – New Connections: PARCC and the Common Core State Standards,” a comprehensive one-day program addressing 1.) state and national policy relating to the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and 2.) practical and effective instructional strategies in mathematics and English language arts for the classroom.   The policy sessions are presented by representatives from PARCC – Illinois and Achieve. PARCC is a group of states committed to developing an assessment system aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Achieve is an independent, bipartisan, non-profit education reform organization based in Washington D.C. that focuses on college and career readiness.   Achieve was selected by states to manage the PARCC assessment consortium. The PARCC consortium was awarded Race to the Top assessment funds to create next generation assessments in mathematics and English aligned to the Common Core State Standards. The instructional sessions at the conference are presented by WIU faculty members from the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction who have extensive experience working with teachers in the professional development context.   Together the presenters and participants will explore teaching and learning processes in today’s changing environment.
