What is a Proctored Exam?

A proctored exam is simply an exam that is supervised by someone who verifies the identity of the student and watches over the student while they take the exam. It is a way to ensure the enrolled students are the ones actually taking the exam and to remove the opportunity for cheating.

Proctored exams are more common in an online course, since the professor is often geographically too far away to supervise exam themselves.

Instructors grade their own examinations and will post grades in the WesternOnline Grade Book. The student and instructor are the only people able to see the individual student's grade.

Exams Proctored at Non-WIU Locations

Students unable to take their exams at WIU’s Macomb or Quad Cities campuses need to complete an Exam Request Form found on their class Desire to Learn (D2L) website. Students MUST contact their Instructor for their form.

They should arrange for an acceptable proctor to conduct the examination and are responsible for fees assessed and postage to return the exam. The following are acceptable proctors:

  • Testing center personnel at community colleges and universities
  • School superintendents and high school principals and counselors
  • Education officers of military personnel
  • A Library that provides proctoring services

Indicating a proctor on your Examination Request Form who does not meet these criteria will cause a delay in processing your examination request. Faculty members, relatives, work supervisors, or the immediate employer of the student may not serve as proctors.

Exam Request Forms

Exam Request Forms should be submitted to our office at least 2 weeks before the exam opens. If a student plans to use the same proctor for all exams, he/she may check all exams at the top of the form. The Exam Request Form may be scanned and emailed to DistanceEdTesting@wiu.edu or faxed to (309) 298-2154.
