A variety of simple communication devices are available to meet the needs of young children. Selection of the appropriate device will depend on input from the child's family and support team. The following are examples of some of the devices available. Further information can be obtained from Don Johnston's website or from Ablenet products.
Big Mack - by Ablenet
Large round device which speaks a 20 second message with one press on the surface. This device is often used as a beginning communication device for young children. A child can use it at home to communicate needs to family members or in school to participate in circle activities.
Step by Step Communicator - by Ablenet
A series of messages can be recorded on this device which is similar in appearance to the One Step Communicator. Messages are played in sequence as the device is pressed. In this way, a student can give directions or ask a series of questions or express him/herself in a variety of ways.
Talking Touch Pad
Children can use the Talking Touch Pad to communicate one of four messages. This device is especially appealing to young children since it is colorful and has the appearance of a small music box or toy. It can be used as an early communication device at home or in an early childhood program. An option of four jacks for switch access is also available. The Talking Touch Pad is made by Frame Technologies.
Many other types of portable communication devices are available which have similar features as well as different options. Selection of any device for a young child should be based on an assessment with input from team members including family, teachers, therapists, and other support staff.
