Users Note: This section focuses on how technology supports emergent literacy. There is a workshop devoted entirely to Curriculum Integration which will address developmentally appropriate practices and other issues related to technology integration in general.
Technology Applications
Technology can be an exciting tool for literacy, no matter what type of computer system is used. Technology applications:
- Provide an interactive, multimedia addition to emergent literacy activities
- Provide activities that assist children to acquire and develop literacy and language pleasantly, productively, and appropriately
- Assist children with severe disabilities to participate in literacy activities

Basic Technology Assumptions
Technology enables all children to participate in literacy activities. Children gain literacy skills when they:
- Use interactive software to explore stories which contain the following:
- Characters
- Setting
- Sequence
- Words
- Communicate about characters or actions in software
Software
The Center for Best Practices has developed literacy technology curriculum activities that are based on the use of three types of software:
1) Interactive commercial programs
2) Interactive programs made with HyperStudio
3) Tool function software
Through careful selection of appropriate software and developmentally appropriate activities, children are given the best opportunity for literacy development.
