HyperStudio Continued...

Another common theme for HyperStudio creations is a classroom version of a favorite story, such as “The Three Bears.”

Children can retell the story in their own words with the teacher entering the letters on the keyboard. The book which is made on the computer can be printed and read frequently at school or taken home to be shared with family members. The book can be placed in the reading center for children to enjoy during the year.

Kid Pix and Kid Pix Studio

Graphics programs, such as Kid Pix and Kid Pix Studio from The Learning Company, provide young children with the tools for artistic expression. Children can free draw and explore the colors, brushes, and other features of the program, or create a story through selected pictures and stamps.

Drawings and stories can be printed in color to be displayed in the classroom or taken home for families to enjoy. As children progress in emergent literacy they will begin to add writing to their drawings. Sample artwork can be kept in the child's portfolio and reviewed later with families.

Children can independently select software through the choices of programs which appear on their desktop. They have become familiar with the printed name for the software or they identify the picture icon. Written messages can be saved and sent to other children through the program.

Further information on KidDesk can be found in Designing the Environment.
