Math, Science, and Social Studies Adaptations
A central focus for all math, science, and social studies activities is the ability for all children to participate. Children need to be actively involved in exploring the environment and interacting with others. Through adaptations in materials or the use of adaptive equipment, all children have opportunities to learn new concepts.
Adaptations to Materials
Many adaptations are available to off-computer materials in the classroom.
Adaptations for literacy and art materials can be found at our other Workshops.

Technology Adaptations
ProScope
ProScope is a USB digitial microscope which can be held or mounted on a tripod for use with Macintosh or PC computers. Images from any surface can be displayed and magnified onto the computer screen. Children can examine bugs or other small insects, strands of hair, fibers from clothes, or anything in the environment they want to explore in detail. Still images and video can be captured and stored on file.
Switches and Toys
All children in the classroom will enjoy playing with toys related to a particular theme, such as Community Helpers. Toys which relate to the theme, such as a police car or fire engine, can be purchased already adapted for switch use. Battery-operated versions of the toys can be adapted with a battery interrupter.
Enabling Devices - Toys for Special Children - have a variety of adapted toys which will fit into classroom themes. The following toys can be found at their website.

Animals
- Animal Rock - adapted music toy
- Animal Switches - switch in the shape of animal head - cat, dog, bear, pig, cow, frog or a fish body. These switches can be attached to a toy or the computer.
- Chirping Chick - adapted toy
- My Little Fish - adapted toy
Community Helpers
- Adapted bus, car, airplane, train, and police car toys can be used with a switch. Children enjoy being the community helper as they control the vehicle.
Food and Nutrition

Insects
- Butterfly Light and Music Puzzle - electronic toy that lights up and plays music as puzzle pieces are inserted in place.
- CyberBug - mouse device in the shape of a bug.
World Around Us

IntelliPics Activities
Activities based on math, science and social studies content can be created with IntelliPics software and used with the IntelliKeys. For further information on IntelliKeys applications view our information in the Adaptations Workshop.
Bats
An overlay can be made with IntelliPics and Overlay Maker to use with the HyperStudio activity in Technology Integration.
Backyard Animals
During a classroom unit on animals, an overlay can be made using digital pictures or scanned photos. Children can explore animals in their backyard and other children's yards.
Other ideas for activities can be found at the IntelliTools Activity Exchange.
IntelliKeys Blocks Activity
Children can design block constructions on the computer with a switch, Discover: Kenx, and the program, Blocks in Motion. A simplified version of the program can be presented on an overlay for use with the IntelliKeys.

Software for Early Mouse Users
For children who are beginning mouse users, software is available which requires only slight movement of the mouse to activate animation, sound, and/or a visual response on the screen. Children can make any movement with the mouse and get a result.
JumpStart Toddler
- As part of the activities related to animals, children who need a simpler software program and beginning mouse use could use the dog portion of JumpStart Toddler. They can "fetch" several items, such as a bone, a shoe, and a newspaper, for the dog.
Reader Rabbit Toddler
- Several activities on this software relate to animal babies. Children can engage in matching and problem solving activities along with related off-computer materials.
There are a variety of ways to adapt activities for young children. Selecting the appropriate device or toy is a decision to be made by team members, including the family.
