Content

Software can also be categorized according to the main content of the program. A program can be used to supplement a curricular theme, such as animals or families. “Just Grandma and Me” and “Just Me and My Mom” are examples of software that can be used at the computer center while other activities and materials related to family are available at other classroom centers. Some software will have more than one content area. For example, Thinkin’ Things has musical parts to it, but also has the Fripples Store. The program fits into artistic expression and concepts of math for buying fripples.

Suggestions for software titles which fit into themes can be found in the article from ACTTive Technology, “Making Tech Work for You”.

Software can also be categorized according to content to support concepts or develop skills.

Literacy – many storybook programs, such as the Living Books software, help children develop print concepts. As children click on words and see actions related to words, they learn that words have meaning. They can see words highlighted from left to right and from the top to the bottom of the page.

Math – children learn patterning/sequencing, make comparisons and develop critical thinking skills as they interactive with programs, such as Millie’s Math House and James Discovers Math.

Science – concepts related to seasons, animals, and climate can be learned with software, such as Sammy’s Science House. Off-computer activities which provide children with outdoor experiences

Creativity – children can use software to create a picture with drawing tools or build something on the screen with blocks which can be animated, or write a message to another person. For children with physical disabilities, this software and adaptive input may be their only means for creativity.

Understanding Cultures – software based on folk stories from different cultures will help children learn about others’ ways. Simple stories help children relate to another child from a different culture.

Explore Favorite Books – software based on favorite children’s books, such as “Green Eggs and Ham” or “Stellaluna”, provides children with opportunities to explore and interact with characters and situations

Play Favorite Games – software which depicts a favorite board game, such as “Candyland Adventure”, or allows children to put together a puzzle, provides children opportunities to play their favorite games through the computer. Adaptive input may provide the only means for some children to participate in a game or move pieces of a puzzle.

Adaptive Input

Software which is designed to use a particular input method can be categorized according to the adaptive device. The most common devices include switch, touch screen, IntelliKeys and Discover:Kenx. Although IntelliKeys and Discover:Kenx can be set up for use with any software, there are specially designed programs and ready made set ups that are used with these devices. The following list is suggested software for each device.

Since the touch screen takes the place of the mouse input, any mouse-operated software can be used with programs such as;

  • Bailey’s Book House
  • Blocks in Motion
  • EA*Kids Art CeKid Pix Deluxe
  • Green Eggs and Ham
  • How Many Bugs in a Box
  • Imo and the King

SoftWare

The following programs can be used with IntelliKeys to customize activities for young children.

  • Thinkin’ Things
  • Animal Habitats
  • Click It!
  • IntelliPics
  • IntelliPics Studio

Learning Preferences

Software can be selected according to children’s different learning styles and preferences. Howard Gardner identified eight different intelligences which correspond to children’s learning styles (Gardner, H. (1993). Multiple intelligences. New York: Basic Books.)

Children approach learning in different ways according to their identified intelligences. Suggested software can be identified for each intelligence based on its characteristics.

Software Selection

Select software according to the following characteristics:
    • Spatial
    • Logical/Mathmatical
    • Bodily/Kinesthetic
    • Interpersonal
    • Intrapersonal
    • Musical
    • Naturalist

Spatial Characteristics

  • Contains visual cues
  • Uses maps or diagrams
  • Contains mazes or puzzles

Logical/Mathematical Characteristics

  • Contains problem solving activities
  • Uses word patterns in reading software
  • Allows children to experiment
  • Contains strategic games

Bodily/Kinesthetic Characteristics

  • Has accompanying manipulatives
  • Allows objects to be moved around on screen
  • Uses animated graphics

Interpersonal Characteristics

  • Allows interaction with characters
  • Requires two or more players
  • Allows group decision-making
  • Addresses social needs

Intrapersonal Characteristics

  • Encourages self-awareness
  • Is self-paced
  • Allows play against the computer

Linguistic Characteristics

  • Contains stories, labels, word puzzles
  • Contains speech

Musical Characteristics

  • Combines stories with songs
  • Contains music
  • Allows children to create their own songs

Naturalist Characteristics

  • Encourages exploration
  • Contains content related to nature
  • Addresses environmental issues
