"Selection of Appropriate Software is Critical."Software Evaluation Factors

The selection of appropriate software is critical to children's effective use of technology. The following criteria was developed by the Center for Best Practices in Early Childhood for evaluating software for young children.

  • The software is open-ended and allows the child the opportunity to explore.
  • The software provides problem-solving opportunities.
  • The software provides a safe and non-threatening place to fail.
  • The child controls the process.
  • The software allows the child to be successful.
  • Animation, graphics, sound, and color are used well.
  • The software stimulates the child's interest.
  • The software encourages active involvement.
  • The content reflects a diverse society.
  • The content is developmentally appropriate.
  • Feedback is effective and non-threatening.
  • “Incorrect” input is not threatening.
  • Exiting the program is easy and safe.
  • The program is easy to navigate.
  • The program operates at an acceptable speed.
  • Hardware and software are compatible.
  • Instructions are clear and easy to follow when needed.

Software Evaluation Form

Besides the criteria checklist, the Center for Best Practices has developed a “Software Evaluation Form” to rate the following features of software:

Content/Educational Value

  • 5 items related to objectives and content of the software

Instructional Design

  • 8 items related to level of difficulty, how well graphics and sound are used, whether feedback is effective, and how well content is displayed.

Usability

  • 8 items related to how well input errors are handled, how quickly the program operates, the clarity of on-screen instructions and documentation, and the ability to use adaptive input with the program, or keep child records.
"Software Evaluation." This form is used by individual teachers evaluating software to purchase for their classroom or during workshops.

Child Designing at Computer.The Center for Best Practices in Early Childhood has compiled a database of early childhood programs. This database will be available online soon. The database is designed to guide early childhood staff and families in selecting appropriate software for young children. The following information is found in the database:

  • Software title
  • Publisher
  • Input method required
  • Image size
  • Image type
  • Sound
  • Type of color
  • Level of interactivity
  • Type of movement
  • Platform
  • Content area
  • Description of program
