Bonnie Sonnek

Associate Professor
Coordinator, English Education
English Education, Critical Literacy, Nature Writing
PhD Language, Literacy, and Culture (English Education)

Bonnie was born one of 10 children to a southern Minnesota farm couple. She received her B.S. in English and public speaking at Winona State University in MN, and then taught high school for 10 years in MN, Iceland, Germany and Texas before she returned to school (in Texas) to receive an MA in Developmental Education with an emphasis in basic writing. She earned her PhD at the University of Iowa in 2003 in Language, Literacy and Culture and came to WIU that same year. She works with pre-service teachers in the English Education program where she teaches Comp for Teachers, Topics in English Education and Methods in Secondary English. In her spare time (and when she is not injured), she rides her Missouri Foxtrotter, Belle, makes quilts, reads and writes. She spends her summers in Montana recovering(!) and helping a friend move cattle around the Kootenai National Forest in northwest Montana. She loves WIU, her students, and the neighbors in Macomb she is lucky enough to have around her.
