Professional Writing Minor

WIU offers an interdisciplinary minor in Professional Writing that is designed to provide training, experience, theoretical background, and credentialing for careers in editing, technical writing, or professional writing, as well as for positions in business and industry which require writing expertise. Since so many current job opportunities require evidence of writing ability, the minor in Professional Writing will enhance any major offered at WIU.

Students in the Professional Writing Minor can focus on the writing of their choice, depending on their majors, future plans, and personal interest. Within the minor, students can begin to prepare for careers in:

Computer Web Design Law Reporting
Desktop Publishing Lobbying Speech Writing
Editing Magazine Writing Technical Writing
Fund Raising Personnel Management And many more

Minor requirements

The minor requires 18 hours (six courses). No more than one course which fulfills a requirement for a major may be counted in the minor.

Core: 6 s.h. (two courses)

  1. One course chosen from: ENG 380, ENG 381, or IS 320.
  2. ENG 483.

Electives: 12 s.h. (four courses)

  1. Choose four of ENG 370, 380*, 381*, 383, 387, 480, 481 (when appropriate), 482, 484, or 495; GCOM 217; IS 320*; JOUR 305, 330, 340, or 348.
  2. Two electives must be English courses.
  3. *No course may count as core and elective in an individual’s degree plan.
