English & Journalism offers a wide variety of scholarships and awards every year. For questions and application procedures, contact our advising office.
Scholarships
The following scholarships are awarded annually to English & Journalism students. To apply for any of these scholarships, visit the Department Advising Office. Applications are accepted in Spring. For Spring 2010, the deadline is March 5.

| Dr. John Castle Memorial Scholarship | Incoming Freshman English major, 3.5 high school GPA, 26/27 ACT | $500 |
| Dr. Olive Fite American Literature Scholarship | English major, 3.0 GPA, recommendation of American Literature faculty member | $750 |
| Dr. Irving Garwood Shakespeare Scholarship | English major, 3.0 GPA, junior/senior standing, recommendation of Shakespeare faculty | $250 |
| Lila S. Linder English Scholarship for Women | Female English major, 3.3 GPA, at least sophomore standing, leadership, dependability, service | $750; renewable |
| Lila S. Linder English Scholarship for Men | Male English major, 3.3 GPA, at least sophomore standing, leadership, dependability, service | $750; renewable |
| Alfred J. Lindsey Memorial Scholarship | Graduate or undergraduate English major, at least junior standing, 3.0 GPA undergraduate, 3.5 GPA graduate, exceptional interest & skill in writing, must submit writing samples (10-page maximum) | $1000 |
| John Merrett Scholarship in British Literature | Graduate or undergraduate English major, at least junior standing, must submit essay from WIU British Lit. course | $750 |

| Beth M. Stiffler Memorial Scholarship | Junior English Education major, 3.0 GPA, fully accepted into TEP, 2 recommendations (one from ENG 384 or EDUC 439 faculty), submit writing sample from English Education course | $500 |
| Bill Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship in Journalism | Journalism major, junior/senior standing, applicant must reside in circulation area of Quincy Herald Whig or LaHarpe Quill | Two awards, $500 each, or one award, $1000 |
| Kenneth L. Dixon Memorial Scholarship in Journalism | Incoming Freshman Journalism major, 26 ACT, rank top 20% at McDonough County High School, preference for Colchester, IL resident | $500; renewable |

Awards
English & Journalism administers the following awards:
- The Leland essay contest for students in ENG 100, ENG 180, and ENG 280. Deadline for 2009 awards is January 25, 2010.
- The Graduate Program administers several awards and fellowships, including the Conger Essay Award, Mahoney Fellowship, and Walker Fellowship. The deadline for AY2010-11 awards is April 1, 2010.
- Two creative writing awards: the Lois C. Bruner Literary Nonfiction Award, and the Cordell Larner Award in Fiction or Poetry. The deadline for AY2009-10 awards is April 10, 2010.
- Several Journalism awards, given to the best in-class work in graphics and writing. Details to come soon.
