Leland Essay Contest Rules
WIU students who successfully completed ENG 100, ENG 180 or ENG 280 during the Spring 2008 or Fall 2008 semesters may participate in the contest.
Students may submit one essay per class completed in 2008. For example, a student who completed both ENG 180 and ENG 280 may submit two essays, one from each course.
Identifying information must be removed from all submitted essays. This includes the names of teacher and student printed on the first page of the essay. Student names which appear in the text of the essay (for example, if the essay is a personal narrative) should be changed.
The highest standards of academic honesty are expected for all contestants. All essays must be the original work of the student. Any essay which fails to meet these standards, as determined by the judges or the contest coordinator, will be disqualified.
Essays must be submitted to the WIU Writing Program office (Simpkins 129) on or before Monday, January 26, 2009, at 4:00 pm. This is a hard deadline. No essays will be accepted after the deadline.
Each winner will be notified of his or her award by Friday, February 20, 2009. Each winner must provide a Microsoft Word computer file of his or her winning essay to the contest coordinator by Friday, March 6, 2009, or risk disqualification.
By entering the contest, each participant gives permission for his or her essay to be published in Western Voices 2009, if selected for an award.
Winners are determined by a panel of volunteer judges who teach composition courses in the Department of English & Journalism. The panel of judges is selected by the Writing Committee.
