Writing Requirements

English 180, College Composition I
The first-year course emphasizes writing to learn and college-level academic writing, including writing about texts. The course introduces a variety of research tools, including work in the WIU library and internet research.

English 280, College Composition II
The sophomore course explores the relationship between writers and their readers. Students extend the study of their own writing processes (begun in 180) to the study of reading processes. Reading a book-length study of an academic topic provides contexts for research and writing.

Writing in the Disciplines
At the junior level students take a course (or courses) designated by their major department which will provide instruction in the conventions and styles of writing in that field. They explore writing as a way of creating knowledge and sharing that knowledge with fellow professionals in the discipline.
