New International Student Orientation

The School of Global Education and Outreach is committed to giving its new international students an informative, fun, thorough and valuable orientation experience through the following services:

  • Free pickup from the Quad City Airport (MLI) or Macomb train station 
  • FREE PICKUP IS MONDAY, AUGUST 17 & TUESDAY, AUGUST 18

  • Immigration and academic check-in
  • Opening your WIU email and STARS account (if you haven't done so prior to arrival)
  • Banking, shopping, and restaurant trips
  • Assistance finding and moving in to permanent housing
  • Introductions to WIU students, faculty, staff, and community
  • Learning about the WIU campus and Macomb community

Each student will be charged a non-refundable $75 orientation fee charge if attending the Macomb campus.

ORIENTATION SCHEDULE 

Orientation days are the only time when staff can help you with shopping, banking trips, and moving. Please make arrangements for all of these activities during the orientation days

Wednesday, August 19, 2020
  • 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.: Pick-ups for check-in. To be picked up for check - in, please email pickup@wiu.edu .
  • 9:00 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.: Check-in (Heritage Room, University Union)
  • 1:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.: Lunch Break
  • 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Bank Trip Leaving from the Heritage Room in the University Union.
  • 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.: Beu Health Center Trip: Leaving from the Heritage Room in the University Union. Please know that the Beu Health Center CAN NOT draw blood on Friday, August 21. NOTE:  STUDENTS MUST GO TO BEU HEALTH CENTER BEFORE SHOPPING AND BANKING.
  • 2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Check-in (Heritage Room, University Union)

STUDENTS MUST COME TO THE HERITAGE ROOM IN THE UNIVERSITY UNION FIRST TO BEGIN CHECK IN 
  • 8:30 a.m. - WESL Placement Test Required for all who have not met their English language proficiency. Please bring your passport and $100 USD (Horrabin room 25)
  • 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.: Pick-ups for check - in: To be picked up for check - in, please email pickup@wiu.edu.
  • 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.: (Heritage Room, University Union)
  • 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Trips to Campus Offices: Leaving from Heritage Room.
    These trips are scheduled for students to receive vaccinations, a student I.D., and other important items that are required at check-in. Please know that Beu Health Center CAN NOT draw blood on Friday, August 21.
  • 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m.: American Classroom Presentation and Free Lunch. (University Union Heritage Room)
  • 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.: Information Sessions - This presentation is mandatory and will cover information from different places at Western Illinois University. (University Union Heritage Room)
  • 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.: Shopping Trip - Leaving from the University Union Heritage Room. NOTE:  STUDENTS MUST GO TO BEU HEALTH CENTER BEFORE SHOPPING AND BANKING.
  • 5:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.: Pick - ups for American Culture Night
  • 5:45 p.m.: American Culture Night - This is a free dinner and presentation on American culture. (Horrabin Hall Room 1.)

Check-in

The first orientation activity you need to attend is Check-in. Once you have completed check-in, you do not need to attend any other check-in periods.

Activities

The activities during orientation are designed to help you get the most of your initial time here at WIU. Please plan on attending the activities listed each day.

Transportation

Transportation is available to some of the orientation activities, but not all. If it says "Go to..." that means there is no transportation and you must go to that location on your own.

Housing

Temporary housing may be available at several hotels such as America's Best Value Inn (1414 W. Jackson Street). If you need help moving into your permanent home, please arrange a time with orientation staff.

Meals

Several lunch and dinner trips will be scheduled throughout the week. If you are interested in going, please notify a staff member prior to the meal.
