Q: Why should I study abroad?

A: Gaining professional development, language skills, cross-cultural skills, and personal growth all very good reasons to study abroad. Another great reason is that studying abroad is a lot of fun, and you can make friendships that will last a lifetime.

The Globalization of markets has had a huge impact on commercial trade, and will continue to shape the way business is conducted in the future. In this environment, businesses and organizations will require personnel with international experience and language skills in order to remain competitive. You can be one of these people!

Unfortunately, there has been little emphasis placed on learning other languages in the United States. Many Americans wrongly assume that the international language of business is English, and that they will never have a need to speak another language. While it is true that many foreign businesspeople speak English, what savvy businesspeople have known for a long time is that the language of business is the language spoken by your customer or client.

With Globalization on the rise, students cannot assume that they will spend their entire careers within the borders of the United States. Most will have to travel internationally; some will find that they will be required to live in foreign country for a short time. Students with international experience and language training will be much better prepared to meet these challenges that those with none.

Q: Where can I go?

A: There are many locations to choose from depending on your personal preference and language ability. The Office of Global Education has programs in the following countries: Canada, Mexico, Brazil, England, Chile, The Netherlands, France, and Finland.

Q: What if I don’t know a second language?

A: There are study-abroad programs that don’t require a second language in England, The Netherlands, Finland, and Canada. However, you may want to consider learning a foreign language. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers instruction in the following languages: Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: The programs offered through the Office of Global Education are affordably priced, and there are many opportunities for financial aid. The Office of Global Education works hard to ensure that funding is not a problem for students that want to study abroad.

Q: When can I go?

A: College of Business and Technology students can study abroad at any time during their university careers. Programs are offered during fall, spring, and summer semesters. There are also programs offered during the winter and spring breaks.

Q: How long can I stay?

A: Programs range from a couple of weeks to one year in length. Students are encouraged to spend as much time as possible abroad. It is possible for students to participate in multiple programs.
