Western Illinois University’s commitment is to provide the premier undergraduate education among all public universities in Illinois supported by excellence in graduate programs far beyond Illinois’ boarders. WIU is located in Macomb, Illinois and covers more than 1,050 acres. It is composed of 53 academic and service buildings, a university golf course, the Frank Horn Field Campus just south of Macomb, and the Alice L. Kibbe Life Science Station on the Mississippi River, the only biological field station on a major American river.
With just over 13,000 students, WIU is the optimal size to provide state-of–the-art educational facilities, up-to-date curriculums, with a focus on learning that insures students are will prepared to enter the twenty-first century. Furthermore, WIU is large enough to offer the benefits of a major university, yet small enough to provide the personal support and attention vital to a superior education. The average class size is 25, and nearly half of all courses enroll 19 or fewer students. WIU maintains a student/faculty ratio of 15:1. Eighty percent of WIU students are undergraduate and 20 percent are graduate students. The University’s enrollment represents 92 Illinois counties, 29 states, and 57 nations.
Established in 1899, the University offers 47 undergraduate and 35 graduate degree programs. There are 665 faculty members who contribute 95% of the credit taught, with graduate assistants making up the remaining 5%. Western’s faculty holds degrees from the nation’s top universities and engages their students in the active process of discovery and understanding. The college is lead by Dr. Fred J. Ebeid, Dean, and Dr. Larry C. Wall, Associate Dean. The College of Business and Technology supported with an annual budget of almost ten million dollars, is one of four academic colleges that make up WIU and is divided into eight departments. In line with the university’s mission, the focus of the faculty in the college is no teaching. Nonetheless, with full accreditation by the AACSB – the International Association for Management Education, the college maintains research expectations from the faculty. Through study abroad programs and faculty collaborations, the College of Business and Technology has formed ties with business colleges and organizations in more than a dozen countries.
The University’s library ranks among the largest in the Unites States for non-doctoral degree granting universities. An architectural and visual showplace as well as a superb learning center, it contains more than 1 million catalogued volumes, 3,000 current periodical subscriptions, 430,000 microforms, and computer access to resources worldwide.
