Graduate Programs of Study

Academic College: Arts and Sciences

Program: Mathematics

Post-Baccalaureate Certificate

Program Overview

The graduate program in the Department of Mathematics prepares students for needed professions in the region and nationwide. It also provides students with a solid graduate-level training in the fundamental methods of continuous and discrete mathematics. Both the theoretical framework and the applications of these methods are covered in the core courses. The 500-level core courses have a significant lean toward applications, but theory is also present. The 600-level core courses have a significant lean toward theory, but applications are not abandoned. The program consists of two steps: (1) six courses that lead to a Certificate in Applied Mathematics, and (2) six additional courses that lead to a Master of Science degree in Mathematics.

Why Mathematics at WIU?

According to Wall Street Journal, a recently conducted study placed mathematician as the topmost job in the list of 200 professions. The second and third places are occupied by actuaries and statisticians. The Department of Mathematics provides M. Sc. in Mathematics with specialization, among other fields, in Applied Mathematics or in Statistics.

Various concepts of mathematics are useful to an increasing number of disciplines in which quantification and logical order are essential. Occupational fields open to students who have completed one of the department's programs include mathematical analysis in industry or government, teaching, computer-related employment, data analysis and other statistical work, and mathematical aspects of business and finance. The Department provides option for Teacher Certification (certification as secondary teachers). Requirements are sufficiently flexible to allow for individual interests and specialization based upon career goals.

Our Faculty

The faculty at the Department include 14 graduate faculty (including 8 full professors) and 11 associate graduate faculty with Ph.D. from Cornell University, University of Illinois, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ohio State, Pennsylvania State, and other universities.

Extracurricular Opportunities

The Department runs Math TEAM Club for future teachers with fun teaching activities and supports the KME Club, for which the graduate students may serve as collaborators and mediators in fostering undergraduate research. Interested students organize study groups for preparing to national tests or tests like GRE, GMAT, Putnam, etc.
