Graduate Council Minutes - January 31, 2005

University Union Board Room, 3:00 p.m.

Members present: B. Anderson, B. Baily, M. Bean, C. Blackinton, D. DeVolder (Chair), A. Ferree, R. Gessner, J. Vigue

Members absent: R. Kelly

Guests present: S. Reinhart, T. Mors, D. Zoerink

I. Curriculum approvals from the Academic Vice President from the previous meeting were reviewed.

II. Graduate Faculty – Full Membership

A. Virginia Dilworth; Assistant Professor; Recreation, Park and Tourism Administration

Dr. Zoerink was present to respond to questions. After much discussion, a motion was made to approve the request. MOTION DENIED. The Council members were concerned with the lack of completed scholarly activity from Dr. Dilworth and suggested she reapply at a later date.

B. John Hemingway; Associate Professor; Recreation, Park and Tourism Administraiton

A motion was made to approve the request. MOTION CARRIED.

III. Miscellaneous and Discussion

A. Graduate Assistant Program Assessment

The Council had a lengthy discussion regarding the duties of graduate, teaching and research assistants. Council members will gather additional information from their colleagues for continued discussion at the next meeting. A motion was made to table this item. MOTION CARRIED.

B. Graduate Student Research and Professional Development Fund

A member from each college was elected to form a sub-committee which will meet to review applications and determine who will be awarded funding for the spring/summer semesters. The meeting will take place after February 15. Members of the sub-committee are: Dr. Bean, Dr. Gessner, Dr. Anderson, and Dr. DeVolder.

C. Reports on Academic Dishonesty

Dr. Baily notified the Council of reports of dishonesty submitted to the Graduate School.

D. Special Topics Report

Dr. Baily notified the Council that CCPI is reviewing Special Topics courses and the ability to list specific titles for special topics on undergraduate student transcripts. She requested Council members to consider the same for graduate students.

IV. Graduate Student Appeals

A. Request for reconsideration of Spring 2005 assistantship – Law Enforcement and Justice Administration

The student and departmental representatives each made statements and responded to questions from the Council. A motion was made to support the department’s decision to terminate the student’s assistantship. MOTION CARRIED with one abstention and six in favor.
