Important Dates and Deadlines

Graduation Application

  • Graduation applications must be filed with the School of Graduate Studies by March 10 (for spring graduates) and October 10 (for fall graduates). If received after that date, the graduation date will be moved to the next semester. (Must have a degree plan on file in the School of Graduate Studies before application can be accepted.)
  • The Application for Graduation form can be found here.
  • Attending commencement does not guarantee graduation. All academic requirements must be complete and all paperwork on file in the School of Graduate Studies by January 8, 2021 before diplomas are awarded.

Cap and Gown Orders

  • The University Bookstore is the sole provider of officially licensed Western Illinois University graduation regalia.  Caps, gowns and tassels are available from the University Union Bookstore beginning October 10, 2020. Visit wiu.edu/bookstore to order online. Graduates will wear black caps and gowns.
  • The cost is as follows:
    • $32.50 for master and specialist degrees
    • $75.00 for doctorate degree
  • Orders may be shipped via UPS through TBD.

Commencement Program

  • Students must have their graduation application on file in the School of Graduate Studies office by March 10 (for spring graduates) and October 10 (for fall graduates). If received after that date, the graduation date will be moved to the next semester.
  • Students who have invoked the Privacy Act will not have their names printed in the program or released to their local media by University Relations unless they sign a release form at the Office of the Registrar.
  • The commencement program will be available online.

Diploma

  • Your diploma and a complimentary transcript will be mailed approximately 6-8 weeks after commencement, providing there are no financial encumbrances and all requirements have been met. The address on your graduate application will be used.

Commencement Photo

  • Photographs of graduates will be included in the virtual ceremony. Students must provide their own photo. Caps and gowns are encouraged but business casual or WIU attire is also acceptable. (WIU reserves the right to refuse any inappropriate photo submission). All photos must be submitted by November 6 - late submissions will not be included.
  • Students must submit their own photos following these guidelines. Photos should be landscape orientation (horizontal), 4x6 inches, 300 dpi, JPEG file. A standard iPhone photo will be sufficient.
  • All students who wish to have their image included must email those as specified above to Grad-Office@wiu.edu. Please included your name and WIU ID number in the email.
