Graduate Council Minutes - April 23, 2012

I. ANNOUNCEMENTS

A. Introduction of new Graduate Council members for 2012-2013

1. Dr. Jim McQuillan, Computer Science, College of Business and Technology
2. Dr. Tammie Walker, Music, College of Fine Arts & Communication       

Drs. McQuillan and Walker were present for the introduction. The Council welcomed the new members.

B. Election of Chair and Vice Chair for 2012 - 2013

Dr. Brian Locke was nominated from the floor. As Dr. Locke was the only candidate, Dr. Polley moved to approve Dr. Locke by acclamation as chair of the Graduate Council for the year 2012-2013. Dr. Amy Mossman accepted the nomination to serve as Vice Chair, and was also approved by acclamation.

Dr. Polley motioned to move item IV.D, Summer School Committee, to I.B, which was unanimously approved. Prof. Jill Myers volunteered to serve on the Summer School committee.

C. Graduate Council Meeting Dates for 2012-2013

Dr. McClure announced the meeting dates for 2012-2013 are available on the Graduate School website at: http://www.wiu.edu/graduate_studies/faculty_and_staff_resources/gcmeetings.php .

D. Macomb Master Plan Meeting -- April 24, 10-11am.       

Dr. Parsons announced the meeting at the Physical Plant tomorrow. As Dr. Mossman is currently serving on the committee, she also agreed to represent the Graduate Council at Master Plan meetings.

2. Requests for integrated baccalaureate and master’s degree programs

Paperwork requesting B.B. in Marketing/MBA arrived in Graduate School after agenda had been sent to Council members. Copies of the request were distributed and Dr. McClure asked for a motion to add this to the agenda.

Dr. John Drea presented the request and answered questions regarding the integrated program and requirements for undergraduate students wishing to apply to the program. Model degree plans were provided in each request for an integrated program.

H. Museum Studies

1. Request for integrated baccalaureate and master’s degree program

a. B.S. in RPTA/M.A. in Museum Studies

Dr. Bean asked for clarification of language on item 12. of the final page of the request listing courses for program requirements, voicing concern that it reads all courses must be taken. Ann Rowson Love agreed the word “can” should be used in place of “will”, to indicate core courses and elective courses.

IV. OLD BUSINESS

A. Sub-committee Report: Graduate Research Day       

Dr. Amy Mossman reported the breakdown of interest from departments regarding Graduate Research Day and if they would be inclined to participate, eight departments replied in favor, four replied no, and six indicated maybe.

Dr. Polley asked for a note to the minutes: is this term “graduate coordinators” used elsewhere? Consistent language is needed, and terms need to be defined, either with one succinct term, or responsibilities defined if additional terms are used.

A. Graduate Program Assessment

Dr. Lori Baker-Sperry and Dr. Nancy Parsons presented the Summary of Assessment of Student Learning for 2010-2011, and answered questions regarding the results of the assessment.
