I. STUDENT APPEALS
A. Request to late withdraw from a course
1. ECON 538
The student presented the request and responded to questions from Council members. The request was to late withdraw from ECON 538, Fall 2006. It was noted the student experienced poor performance in the class as pre-requisite courses had not been taken.
Motion: To approve the request to late withdraw from ECON 538, Fall 2006. (Locke/Pawelko). MOTION APPROVED: 5 YES – 0 NO – 2 AB
B. Request to transfer a total of 18 semester hours into a graduate program
The student was unable to attend the meeting, however, Dr. Yoder was present to respond to questions from the Council. He noted the RPTA program will allow up to 9 s.h. of transfer work, thus, the request was to allow an additional 9 s.h. of transfer work into their graduate program. Of those 18 s.h. taken at SIU, 9 s.h. are core courses and 9 s.h. are electives. The RPTA program requires a total of 34 s.h. for degree completion. Dr. Yoder indicated the student plans to take
25 s.h. at WIU, so the request could be a moot point as with the 9 s.h. of transfer work she will have the required hours for completion. Sullivan read an email statement from the student.
Motion: To table the request so the Council can ask the student if she wishes to withdraw her appeal. If she does not wish to withdraw the request, she must submit a degree plan before they will review the appeal. (McNabb/Pawelko) MOTION APPROVED: 7 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
C. Request to late withdraw from a course
1. LEJA 509
The student presented her appeal and responded to questions from the Council. Dr. Clontz was present on behalf of the LEJA program. The student indicated it was an oversight on her part for not withdrawing before the deadline. Also, she indicated this course is not required for degree completion and that she had difficulties participating as this is an on-line course and she does not have internet access in her home.
Motion: To approve the request to late withdraw from LEJA 509, Summer 2008. (Montalvo/Hassan) MOTION APPROVED: 4 YES – 1 NO – 3 AB
D. Request to hold an assistantship with less than a 3.0 GPA
1. Biology/Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center
The student provided a statement and responded to questions from the Council. She indicated her GPA dropped at the end of last semester due to a lack of time management on her part. She has adjusted her work and study schedules to incorporate library time for studying. Ms. Carr noted the student is determined to raise her GPA following this semester and realizes her academic studies are the priority. Dr. Spier was present from the Department of Biological Sciences and offered their support of her request. The student’s graduate GPA is 2.666.
Motion: To approve the request to hold an assistantship position with less than a 3.0 GPA for Fall 2008. (Hassan/McNabb) MOTION APPROVED: 7 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
Meeting adjourned: 4:55 p.m.
