Jazz and Classical Guitar Ensemble Information

Students at WIU can participate in either the jazz or classical guitar ensemble each semester they are enrolled in the university, regardless of their declared major. Auditions are held during the first week of class each semester and both groups are open to students from all majors, music and otherwise, who wish to participate and who successfully pass the audition.

The classical and jazz guitar ensembles rehearse weekly throughout the semester and perform both on and off campus several times during the course of the school year. Most of the repertoire performed by both groups is written or arranged by members of the guitar ensembles. As well as featuring guitarists, the jazz guitar ensemble also holds positions for drums, auxiliary percussion, bass, vocals and violin.

Audition Requirements

Students wishing to audition for either guitar ensemble should prepare two (2) contrasting pieces of their choice to perform and be prepared to sight read a piece representative of the jazz or classical guitar repertoire.

To schedule an audition for either guitar ensemble, classical or jazz, please contact Professor Matthew Warnock at MR-Warnock@wiu.edu.
