What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 30,000 houses across the United States. Habitat houses are purchased by the homeowner families. Three factors make Habitat houses affordable to low-income people worldwide: Houses are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage. Homeowner and volunteers build the houses under trained supervision. Individuals, corporations, faith groups and others provide financial support.

So what is a campus chapter?

Habitat for Humanity WIU Campus Chapter is an OSA-sponsored student volunteer group founded on campus in 1999. Our motto is: Getting dirty with a purpose, and we live up to it! A campus chapter has three main areas of concentration:

  • Education/Awareness
    • We work to get the Habitat name out on campus through a variety of means. Our big events include our Rake-a-thon, Act-Speak-Build Week, and our Collegate Challenge Trips. Keep an eye out for us on campus and in the Union!

  • Fundraising
    • Without funds, we can’t build houses! All money that is donated to our organization is turned over to our Mc Donough County Affiliate to be put towards the next housing project.

  • Building
    • Last, but not least, the most fun part. This is your chance to pick up a hammer and do a little construction. Our campus chapter prides itself on building every Saturday during the Fall and Spring. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn, work hard, and get a little dirty!
Our next meeting is Monday, October 22 at 5:00 pm in the Union's Algonquin room. Rake-A-Thon starts October 29th and ends Nov 10th. Please contact us for more information and to schedule a time to have your yard raked.
