New Minor in Legal History Available at Western
Oct 29, 2009
WIU's History Department will offer an 18-hour Minor in Legal History, starting in Fall 2010. The Legal History Minor will appear on official student records and academic transcripts.
A minor in Legal History provides students with expertise in the origins and historical development of the Anglo-American legal tradition. Students may specialize in the study of English legal traditions or those of the United States, or may divide their focus between the two.
Whether contemplating a future legal career or innately interested in the historical evolution of the law and constitutional systems, non-History majors in many fields will find the Legal History Minor to be a valuable addition to their WIU transcript.
Students who plan to attend law school may instead wish to major in History, the most popular undergraduate major of law school graduates. For more information on preparing for law school with a History degree, see WIU's Pre-Law in History web page, with information about relevant courses and the law school application process.
WIU's new Legal History minor includes a course on American Legal History (Hist 303), and gives students the option of focusing on British legal and constitutional history, Enlightenment foundations of Anglo-American law, or the origins and evolution of the United States legal and constitutional traditions.
To minor in Legal History, contact the History Department's Undergraduate Advisor, Ralph Heissinger, who will answer your questions and help you work out a Legal History Minor that suits you.
In addition to the new Legal History Minor, the History Department also offers a Minor in Modern Global History and a Minor in History.
