At the 2010 Undergraduate Research Day, seniors for the first time may compete for awards for excellence in the poster and podium presentation categories.
To be eligible,
(1) the poster or podium presentation must be the work of a current WIU senior or of a group led by a current WIU senior and
(2) the project must be endorsed by the presenter’s mentor in an e-mail paragraph sent to WL-Knox@wiu.edu.
In consideration of the practical limitations of judging, only completed projects of exceptional quality should be placed into competition.
Students wishing to participate in the contest must submit abstracts by the advanced date of April 9th. Likewise, the mentor’s endorsement must also be received by this date. Students who do not submit abstracts by this date will not be considered for competition and, at the discretion of the Undergraduate Research Day Committee, the number of contestants may be limited to 20 in each category.
Awards will be given to the top three poster presentations and the top three podium presentations, for six total:

Poster Presentations will be judged on
1. Overall appearance (Display of materials, use of pictures and graphs or other supplemental materials)—10 points
2. Clarity of presentation (were poster guidelines and standards of scientific or humanistic research followed)—20 points
3. Ability of the presenter to orally summarize presentation to judges—10 points
4. Ability of the presenter to answer questions—10 points
Posters to be considered for judging must be set up by 10:00 a.m. on April 29th. Judging will occur during the first hour of poster presentations, however, the principal authors are expected to be at their poster tables during the entire presentation period (except for breaks) from 12:30-2:30 p.m.
Podium Presentations will be judged on
1. Overall appearance (PowerPoint slides or other media)—10 points
2. Clarity of presentation (oral presentation guidelines followed and ideas well organized)—20 points
3. Presentation skills (voice volume and quality, eye contact, fluency of remarks)—10 points
4. Ability to answer questions—10 points
Registered oral presentations will be placed in a special time slot for judging purposes.
The decision of the judges will be final. Award winners will be announced Thursday, April 29. |
