The Horn Ensemble Competition will provide a forum for the development of Horn Ensemble Repertoire and Performance. Ensembles may be Quartets or Large Horn Ensembles.

Each ensemble will perform the following:

1. At least one movement from the following works from one of the following lists:

   * (Winners of the International Horn Society Composition Contest)

   • QUARTETS
     Faust--Quartet for Four Horns
     Heiden—Quartet for Horns
     Hill—Shared Reflections
     Hindemith—Sonata for Four Horns
     Presser—Horn Quartet
     * Turner—Quartet No. 1

   • LARGE HORN ENSEMBLES
     * Deschamps—Sextuor: Mars 1981
     * Ring—Suite for 8 Horns
     * Stanhope—Horn Player's Retreat and Pumping Song
     * Winteregg—Pastiche

2. A work of the ensemble's choice to complete a program of up to 20 minutes.

PRELIMINARY ROUND

Each applying ensemble will submit a high quality recording. This recording must contain one of the required repertoire selections from the above list and an additional repertoire selection of the ensemble's choice.

FINAL ROUND

Up to six Ensembles will be selected for The Final Round on Saturday, June 6th. Quartets should perform without a conductor. Large Ensembles may choose to use a conductor.

• Each ensemble will receive adjudicated comments on their performance.
• One ensemble will receive a cash prize of $250.
• One ensemble will be selected to perform on the final Symposium Concert on Sunday, June 7, 2009.
