Employee Spotlight Tim Engel

Tim Engel

Publications Manager
University Relations

“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” –Michael Jordan

Tim works in the University Relations (UR) Department as a Publications Manager…but he would tell you that it’s not work when you love what you do, and Tim certainly does! Tim lights up when he talks about the staff in UR, and is quick to tell me how talented they are! One of the marks of a great leader is to shine the light on others. Tim oversees a staff which includes graphic designers and editors who create marketing pieces for Western Illinois University. Many of the promotional materials that the Admissions Office, Alumni Relations, and the Foundation Office use are created by the University Relations staff. He also works closely with Document & Publication Services as well as outside vendors. Much of his work is developing the specs for his designers to follow, overseeing the design, sending the job files to the appropriate vendor and all correspondence with those vendors.

Tim is a two-time Alum of Western Illinois University. As an undergraduate student, a part of a class assignment was to complete a Civil Service application and send it in, which he did. He had no idea that it was actually “on file” and active, until he received a call from the WIU “Personnel” Office. He was working at the time in Peoria. He was asked if he was interested in applying for an opening for a Graphic Designer. At the exact same time that he applied for that opening he received an offer from WIU for a Draftsman position. He had to choose between the two. He chose the Graphic Designer one and the rest is history! Twenty seven years later, Tim still serves in the same department!

The creativity of the UR staff is what Tim likes most about his job. He shares, “We have some amazing talent in this office. I miss designing, but I still get excited to see what our staff is producing. The people are wonderful!” He continues on, “I love how beautiful our campus is! The beautification projects have made it look wonderful. Those workers have improved the landscape all over campus!” (Do you see a pattern? Again, what Tim likes most about his job is shining the light on what others do best!)

When asked what he might say about WIU to prospective employees, he didn’t miss a beat and shared, “It’s a fun atmosphere in which to work! There are talented people here. It’s a wonderful small town community. Everyone is on the same page. Our mission is to bring students here and educate them. It’s the same all over campus. We all keep moving forward together, as a group.”

A good day at work for Tim is when he receives a note or an email from customers or students about how cool the UR print materials are. Tim adds, “That’s not what we are seeking but there is nothing better than the satisfaction of receiving such a high compliment!”

Can you guess who Tim feels has helped him in his career? “Every employee I have worked with has helped me in some way. Even the people, who were here before me, helped me. The designers we have now help me. I began my career with colored pencils and paper. Technology has completely changed this profession. It’s exciting to see the changes! The press companies who print our materials will compliment us on our designs, and that helps us grow!

Tim enjoys attending many WIU athletic events. You can find him on the golf course, or at baseball, football, and basketball games. Tim says that his love of attending these events has carried over from his time spent here as a student. Tim, and his wife Missy, enjoy spending time with their two children: Tyler, who plays baseball for the University of Illinois; and Elizabeth, who is a WIU Kinesiology Alum living in Naperville.

HR salutes Tim Engel as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
