R.J. "Joe" Cook

Digital Computer Operator III
University Technology - Infrastructure

Have you ever wondered what goes on at night on the WIU campus? You might be surprised to learn that Joe Cook is keeping things moving forward while most of us are at home sleeping! Joe works third shift in Morgan Hall as a Digital Computer Operator III. His duties include: Backing up the daily work many of us do each day, providing routine processes, preparing weekly reports, backing up student files, payroll, the data base, most everything. He works alone and troubleshoots many problems that can occur. Joe began his career at Western Illinois University in March 1989 as a Digital Computer Operator II and has worked in the same department since he began.

Joe shared, “I was a student at WIU and graduated in 1985, majoring in Political Science minoring in Computer Science. I worked at WJEQ for a year and also Union National Back before coming to Western in 1989. I like all aspects of my job. Everyone is so nice here. It’s like a family. I love the people that work here! Western is a great place to work-the environment is great, people are nice, and they compliment me when I do well.”

One of Joe’s most memorable nights at work was when Thompson Hall was evacuated due to a fire. He recounted, “My supervisor called and asked me to open our doors to allow the students who were displaced to stay in the building overnight.”

Joe credits a couple of people with helping him in his career at Western. He shared, “Jim Stocker hired me. He got me interested in NASCAR, which I still enjoy today. Jim was very nice to me and made me feel comfortable immediately. Dave Eck was another supervisor that was very good to me.”

Joe is a big WIU Leatherneck football and basketball fan. He is a season ticket holder for both events, and enjoys cheering the Leathernecks onto VICTORY! In Joe’s spare time you will find him watching all types of sports…baseball, football, basketball, and he recently started watching soccer!

HR salutes R.J. "Joe" Cook as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
