Brent Burnett

Applications Programmer I
University Technology-User Support Services

"Don't sweat the small things. Everything is a small thing."

Brent began his career at Western Illinois University in September 2015 as an Applications Programmer I. He remains in that position, currently. Brent’s position includes printer and hardware troubleshooting, working on the computers in the student labs, going all over campus to troubleshoot problems, and to research potential purchases for departments-making suggestions.

Brent is retired from the US Air Force after serving for 20 years. Thank you, Brent for your service to our country! After he retired, he wanted to be a full-time student and earn his degree. He chose to come to WIU to be near his daughter. He first became a student worker in U-Tech for a year; he was then offered a position in AIMS. After working in AIMS the position in U-Tech opened up and he was offered it. Brent says that he enjoys his job because it’s never the same two days in a row…and it forces him to look at things differently. Brent likes working at Western. He shared, “I drive an hour every day to get to work. I love it here!” Brent added, “My most memorable experience in my job was the first day of working at Western as a new employee. I knew then that this was where I would stay. The folks at AIMS were wonderful. They helped me feel at home and taught me what I needed to know.”

Brent credits Matt and Chad in U-Tech as individuals that have constantly helped him in his position. Brent worked for Matt as a student and learned much from him. Brent also shared that Stacie, Jill, and David Handy in AIMS were very helpful to him when he was there.

When asked about Brent’s favorite thing to do at Western, he responded, “Every week our department goes out to lunch together. Additionally, once a month, we have a potluck dinner and invite the retirees. These events help us build relationships and I love seeing our retired staff!”

It won’t surprise you to learn that in Brent’s spare time, he enjoys working on computers! It’s in his blood. He also enjoys playing video games!

HR salutes Brent Burnett as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
