Tips

A variety of courses are offered in a weekend format to accomodate those students who are working professionals, live out of town, or both. Most weekend academy courses are offered from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday for three weekends. There are usually two or three weeks in between each class session.

For those students who have never taken a weekend academy before, here are a few tips that might help you prepare:

  • It's important to register as early as possible because most instructors send out a syllabus in the mail a few weeks before the class starts. Look over this syllabus thoroughly. Weekend classes are compacted versions of semester classes and may require some reading or additional planning prior to the first weekend.

  • If you are not familiar with Horrabin Hall, plan to leave early enough to find the class and still arrive on time.

  • Consult the Macomb/WIU campus map to locate Horrabin Hall and nearby parking lots. These lots are not restricted on Saturday and Sunday.

  • If you need to stay overnight, call in advance to reserve your room. Certain weekends will be busier than others depending on any special events that may be hosted at WIU. Listed below is hotel information that may be helpful.

  • Ask for the library, bookstore, and computer lab hours of operation so that you can take advantage of these resources while you are on campus.

  • If you would like ideas for where to eat or other area attractions, visit the Macomb area Web site.

Hotel Rates

The hotel rates listed here are based on regular weekend rates when there are no special events being hosted by WIU. Homecoming, for example, brings many people to town and therefore increases room rates. Of the hotels listed, the Days Inn charges a flat rate of $45.00 that is given especially to weekend academy students. Be sure to mention this when making a reservation. The Pineapple Inn also gives discounts to weekend academy students. The amount depends on the weekend.

All rates below are based on 1 or 2 people per room and without tax as of September 1998. The price categories are based on the following table:

$ = 40.00-49.00
$$ = 50.00-59.00
$$$ = 60.00-70.00

A slash (/) between dollar signs indicates that the rates can be either one price category or another.
