Lab Times

The staff at the IMM Lab looks forward to serving all WIU faculty, staff, and students in the 2004 semester. If you have not taken an opportunity to utilize the lab and the services we provide contact us for more information by stopping by Horrabin Hall 85 or calling us at (309) 298-3076. In the past, many of you have successfully had students participate in our one-on-one or small group certificate program to fit your class' technology needs while some of you have preferred to reserve the lab for specific dates throughout the semester and teach the technology related portion of your course yourself. Both of these options are once again going to be available starting January 12, 2004. Lab reservations will be taken on a first come first serve basis.

Capturing Screenshots

A picture can say a thousand words, or so the saying goes. When teaching new concepts, programs, or ideas this is especially true. Have you ever needed an image that was on your screen, but didn't know how to save it for further use? A screenshot allows you to do just that. With a screenshot you can "capture" almost anything currently displayed on your screen and save it as an image file for further use in programs such as PowerPoint® or Word. You may not be able to capture some parts of the screen.

Teaching and Learning Spotlight
WebCT

Chris Sutton

The transformation of the way information is exchanged in our society has had a profound impact on higher education. In particular, the Internet and the worldwide web have allowed instructors new flexibility in dealing with class material. Recently, we have seen a push to incorporate a greater amount of "online" (web-based) material - either as a way to supplement traditional classroom structure or to deliver courses entirely online. To do so can be a daunting task to "techies" and novices alike as getting material available on the web is difficult to persons not familiar with web design, and getting material online in an effective form takes consideration and time. In an attempt to alleviate the former, several companies have developed online course management systems - "canned" web delivery packages that allow instructors to focus on delivery of course content rather than web context (learning code, web design, etc.). Of the numerous course management systems that have emerged during the past decade, two have become dominant throughout higher education: WebCT and Blackboard. This article will focus on WebCT, which is available for use by faculty at WIU.
