Fix - A single position obtained by surveying, GPS, or astronomical measurements, usually given with altitude, time, date, and latitude/longitude or grid position. Latitude - The angular distance, usually measured in degrees, along a meridian north or south of the equator. Lines of latitude are also referred to as parallels. Longitude - The angular distance, expressed in degrees, minutes, and seconds, of a point on the earth's surface east or west of an arbitrarily defined meridian (usually the Greenwich prime meridian). All lines of longitude are great circles that intersect the equator and pass through the North and South Poles. Waypotints - A waypoint is a fixed location with a specified longitude and latitude and UTM coordinates, which is maintained by a global positioning system (GPS). Waypoints mark a destination, a point along the way to a destination, or a point of reference. GPSs can record a waypoint on the spot to within 3 meters or better using a WAAS enabled GPS unit. Waypoints can also be marked on a computer mapping program and uploaded to the GPS, marked on the GPS's own internal map, or entered manually on the device as a pair of coordinates. Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) - The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is a system that improves the precision and accuracy of global positioning system (GPS) location readings. It uses a combination of ground-based stations and specialized satellites to send correction signals to GPS receivers. |
