Applying to WIU
Submission Date
For priority consideration for admission to Western Illinois University, the Center for International Studies must receive the International Application for Admission and all supporting documents by the following dates:
- Fall (August) semester - May 1
- Spring (January) semester - October 1
- Summer (June) session - February 1
Completed applications received after the semester priority date will be considered as program space and processing time permits. Applicants need to consider the time necessary to process the application, obtain the visa and make travel arrangements.
For eligibility and priority consideration for a graduate assistantship for the fall semester, graduate applicants must submit all application materials early enough to be accepted into a degree program by March 15.

Application Process
All international applicants interested in applying for admissions to Western Illinois University and/or WESL Institute must complete and submit an International Application for Admission packet.
Applicants who wish to apply as exchange students must contact the appropriate Study Abroad or International Student Office at their home university.

Official Academic Credentials from all schools
- in native language in sealed envelope directly from overseas institution and
- with certified English translation if in language other than English
- high school transcripts if less than 24 hours of university-level course work
Declaration of Finances Form
- Applicants must show assured support for first year by submitting a Declaration of Finances form.
- If funds are from a source other than the applicant, the sponsor must sign the form and indicate amount of funding pledged.
- Signatures of applicant and sponsor must be in fresh ink.
- Photocopies and faxes are unacceptable.
Financial Support Documentation
- Applicant or sponsor must provide evidence of availability of funds sufficient to support the applicant's first year of expenses while in attendance at WIU
- Date of financial support documentation must be less than one year from start date of desired matriculation term
- Financial documents not in English must be accompanied by an English translation
- Examples of acceptable financial support documents
- original bank statements issued directly by the bank
- original bank letter signed by a bank official
- loan or award letter stamped or certified by lending institution
- Examples of unacceptable financial support documents
- photocopies or faxes of any financial support document
- bank letters without the name of the account holder
- bank letters which do not specify the availability of the minimum amount of financial support
- internet bank statements
Evidence of English Proficiency
If English is not your native language, you are required to submit evidence of English proficiency. This may be done by one of the following means:

Submit an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. The institutional code for Western Illinois University is 1900. TOEFL scores are valid for two years after the test date.
Undergraduate program admissions require a computer-based test score of 213 (CBT) or a paper-based test score of 550 (PBT).
Most graduate program admissions require a computer-based test score of 213 (CBT) or a paper-based test score of 550 (PBT) except for the following programs:
- Chemistry minimum 197 CBT/530 PBT
- Communication minimum 237 CBT/580 PBT
- Educational Administration & Supervision minimum 230 CBT/575 PBT
- English minimum 230 CBT/575 PBT
- Law Enforcement & Justice Administration minimum 190 CBT/520 PBT
- Mathematics minimum 173 CBT/500 PBT
- Physics minimum 173 CBT/500 PBT
OR
- Upon arrival at Western Illinois University, take Western's English-as-a-Second Language (WESL) placement test. On the basis of this test, you will be admitted into
- a full-time English program in the WESL Institute or
- a part-time University program and a part-time English program in the WESL Institute (during fall and spring semesters only) (if you have fulfilled other admissions requirements) or
- a full-time University program (if you have fulfilled other admissions requirements)
OR
- Provide evidence of four academic years of full-time consecutive attendance at an accredited US secondary or post-secondary educational institution within two years of the start date of desired matriculation term.
I did not meet the minimum TOEFL score requirement. Can I still be admitted to Western Illinois University?
