General tax Information

Any student who was enrolled in classes in the USA in year 2008 is required to fill out some kind of income tax forms.  The type of forms you are required to fill out depends on many different things.  This page is designed to help you figure out which forms you need to fill out and how to fill them out. 

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THIS PAGE ONLY GIVES YOU SUGGETIONS AND INFORMATION ON HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR TAX PAPERS.  WE ARE NOT TAX PROFESSIONALS.  THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS THAT CAN COMPLICATE YOUR INCOME TAX RETURNS.  THE CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES CAN TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IN MISTAKES ON YOUR TAX RETURNS.  IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS OR QUESTIONS, YOU ARE ADVISED TO SEE A TAX PROFESSIONAL.   

 

What do I need to file my taxes?

In order to successfully complete your tax forms, you will need the following:

    -your passport and I-20 or DS 2019

    - W-2 forms from any employer you had during the tax year if you worked and earned wages.  Your W-2 forms are automatically mailed to you by your employers to the address they have for you on file.  If you do not receive your W-2 form by the end of January, please contact your employer and request another W-2 form and make sure they have your correct address on file.  

 

What forms do I need to fill out if.....

        ...I was enrolled in classes in 2008 but I did not work?

If you were enrolled in classes in 2008 but did not work, you will need to complete the Federal 8843 form. Click the following links for the 8843 form and instructions on how to fill it out:

        ...I am from India and I made over $3,500?

Indian students enjoy special benefits due to a US/India tax treaty.  If you are an Indian student who was  enrolled in classes in 2008 and worked part-time on campus and made over $3,500, you will need to complete these four forms: the Federal 8843 form, the Federal 1040 NR, the Illinois State 1040, and the Illinois Schedule NR.  Click on the following links to access the necessary froms and instructions on how to complete them:

       ...I am from India and I made under $3,500?

If this is the case, you did not make enough for the treaty to come into effect.  Follow the same instructions described in "...I worked and earned money in the US in 2 008 and none of the above questions relate to me."

 

        ...I worked and I am from Canada and I made under $10,000?

Like India, Canada has a special tax treaty with the US that allows Canadian students who earn less than $10,000 to pay no federal taxes.  If you are from Canada and made less than $10,000, you will need to file these four forms: the Federal 8843 form, the Federal 1040 NR-EZ, the Illinois State 1040, and the Illinois Schedule NR.  Click on the following links to access the necessary froms and instructions on how to complete them:

        ...I am from Canada and I made over $10,000?

If this is the case, you are ineligible for any tax treaty benefits.  The treaty is only for Canadian students who made less than $10,000.  If you are from Canada and made over $10,000 follow the same instructions described in "...I worked and earned money in the US in 2008 and none of the above questions relate to me."

 

       ...I made more than $3,500 and I am from one of the following countries: China, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Isreal, Korea, Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Spain, or Thailand?

If you are from one of these countries, you are eligible to take advantage of a tax treaty the US signed with your country.  To take advantage of the treaty, you will need to file these four forms: the Federal 8843 form, the Federal 1040 NR-EZ, the Illinois State 1040, and the Illinois Schedule NR.   Click on the following links to access the necessary froms and instructions on how to complete them:

        ...I am from one of the following countries: China, Egypt, France, Germany, Indonesia, Isreal, Korea, Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Spain, or Thailand - but made less than $3,500?

If you are from one of the listed countries, you did not make enough money to be covered by the tax treaty.  If you are from one of the listed countries and made less than $3,500 follow the same instructions described in "...I worked and earned money in the US in 2008 and none of the above questions relate to me."
